Billabong Pro Junior Coffs Harbour goes from strength-to-strength on day two

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 11 February, 2009 : - - Park Beach, NSW -- The Billabong Pro Junior Coffs Harbour powered through the second day today, with a blistering day of competition. As conditions steadily improved throughout the morning, with the arrival of a fresh south swell, competitors revelled in the one and a half metre conditions.

With the finest junior surfers in Australasia converging on the Coffs coast, the second day of competition was electric, as scores and performances flew through the roof. Led by the radical and innovative international competitors, the ever-stylish Kiron Jabour (HAW) was in great form.

Currently sitting 31st on the ASP Australasian Pro Junior ratings, after the first two events, Jabour is looking at using this event for a launch pad into a successful 2009. “I’ve had a reasonable start to the year,” he said retrospectively.

Having made the quarterfinals in the Billabong ASP World Junior Championships, everyone, including Jabour, is well aware of the talent he is yet to harness. “I was really happy with how I performed at the World’s – that was one of my better performances to date – but since then I have made constant errors with equipment and tactics,” Jabour admitted. “I felt good this morning, hopefully things will start to turn around.”

With one of the best performances of day two, accruing a combined heat total of 15.35 (out of a possible 20), Jabour will be a dangerous second round match as the event flies into the round of 96. Also flying the international flag was Alejo Muniz (BRA) who tallied an impressive 14.90 total (out of a possible 20) and Hairil Hamzah (BALI) 15.75 (out of a possible 20), who was equally as impressive.

As the third stop on the prestigious 2009 ASP Australasia Pro Junior Circuit, the Grade 3 ASP Rated Boys event, and Grade 1 ASP Rated Girls event, the Billabong Pro Junior Coffs Harbour sees a whopping $23,000 up for grabs.

However, the best performance of day two was reserved for Jack Freestone (Coolangatta, QLD), who smashed the Park Beach peaks to shreds, claiming the highest single wave score of the event – a 9.50 (out of a possible 10).

“It felt good,” Freestone said, with a smile, in response to his excellent ride. “It’s always awesome to open up an event with some good scores and I’m stoked to have started so well.”

The Billabong Pro Junior Coffs Harbour is a mobile event stretching throughout the Coffs Coast and will be held from the 11-15 February 2009 and with the boys division to be held tomorrow, the action shows no sign of slowing down.

The Billabong Pro Junior Coffs Harbour will be broadcast LIVE on Coastalwatch. The Billabong Pro Junior Coffs Harbour is proudly supported by Sony, Virgin Blue, VonZipper, Kustom, Coopers Surf Australia, ASP Australasia and Surfing NSW.
