Enever annihilates Billabong Pro Junior Coffs Harbour in style
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 12 February, 2009 : - - (Park Beach, NSW – Friday, 13 February 2009): Laura Enever (North Narrabeen, NSW) stamped her class, talent and authority on junior female surfing today, taking the Billabong Pro Junior Coffs Harbour in style.
With the hottest female surfing commodities’ on the globe converging on Park Beach today, it was Enever who was left standing; defeating prodigy Tyler Wright (Lennox Head, NSW) in the final. “I’m so stoked,” Enever said after demolishing the final with a combined total of 15.17 (out of a possible 20).
Having been on verge of qualification for the ASP Women’s World Tour in 2008 and after an excellent season in Hawaii, Enever is poised to begin 2009 where she left off last year. “To start the year in such a way is amazing and to surf with the likes of Tyler (Wright) in the final is awesome,” she said.
With a marked increase in swell and improvement in conditions, the final was a window into the future of women’s surfing; as the pair went wave-for-wave in the metre-and-a-half conditions. “Conditions really suited me out there,” Enever added. “I prefer it to be bigger and really enjoy being able to perform on such a stage.”
Despite running into a white-hot Enever, Tyler Wright was in great form throughout the event, heralding her star on the rise from the first heat. Accruing a combined heat total of 10.70 (out of a possible 20), Wright was still happy with her performance.

“Coming second to Laura Enever is nothing to be ashamed of,” said a gracious Wright. “She just out surfed me today, I don’t think there is much else I could have done.” “Although I wasn’t able to get the result I was after it still is a great start of the year for me,” Wright added.
After a remarkable year in 2008, which saw Wright reach the pinnacle of both the international and national arenas, 2009 looks to be another busy year for the 14-year-old. “2009 is going to be a big year ahead with the World Junior Titles and a few other big competitions, but for now I have to go back to school for a weeks.”
Finishing equal third was 14-year-old sensation Ellie-Jean Coffey (Coolangatta, QLD) and Ashleigh Smith (Cabarita, NSW) who were in great form in the excellent conditions, but unfortunately ran into white-hot opponents. Although only 17-years-old herself Enever is excited for the future of the sport, as results at the Billabong Pro Junior Coffs Harbour favoured the young upstarts.
“The results in this event is just a testament to the quality of female surfing in Australia, she said. “Ellie-Jean (Coffey) and Tyler (Wright) are only 14 years old, I’m constantly looking over my shoulder and feeling like an old lady,” she said with a grin. “If they’re anything to go by the future is going to be huge for Australian women’s surfing.
The Billabong Pro Junior Coffs Harbour is a mobile event stretching throughout the Coffs Coast and will be held from the 11-15 February 2009 and with the boys division to be held tomorrow, the action shows no sign of slowing down.
