A NERVOUS WAIT FOR FINALISTS IN OAKLEY SURFING LIFE BIG WAVE AWARDS
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 13 February, 2009 : - - Who’s the lucky guy? Judges in the Oakley Surfing Life Big Wave Awards have narrowed the prestigious Biggest Wave Award down to six rides in preparation for next Thursday’s gala awards presentation. And six surfers are quietly freaking out at the possibility of a fresh $20,000 soon propping up their bank balances.
“The money would make my year,” says Kerby Brown of Western Australia, whose outrageous “double-up” wave at a secret hometown reef break has made the finals. “I’m without a major sponsor at the moment so the money will allow me to continue doing what I love, chasing the biggest swells around the country and finding new crazy waves to ride. I’ve got some incredible new spots up my sleeve -- I just need the funding to get there.”
Kerby, along with fellow West Australian Damien Warr, Maroubra’s Mark Mathews, Bronte’s Kobi Graham, Tasmania’s Marti Paradisis and NSW central coaster Andrew Mooney, will be biting nails and viewing the finalists’ rides on the Surfing Life website surfinglife.com.au in an attempt to predict the outcome.
“Mate, it’s in the bag,” laughs Mark Mathews. In fact Mark reckons the entries are so closely matched that “we should all settle it with a paddle-in final … down at Shipstern Bluff”.
Whoever takes the Award will join a super elite group of former winners, including Ross Clarke-Jones, Alex “Alfy” Cater, and Awards Ambassador Damon Eastaugh – the only surfer ever to win a big wave award twice.
“I’ve met those guys and they seem like genuine people,” says Marti. “We all have the same passion and desires. If you’re keen and passionate you can make things happen… I feel really lucky to be a part of it.”
The finalists, along with 250 crazed big wave surfers and their celebrity fans, will gather at Bondi Pavilion this coming Thursday, February 19, at 7pm to see the Awards winners crowned. Other Awards include Biggest Paddle-in Ride, Best Overall Performance, and the Shooter Awards for photography and video documenting
