More protection urged after Bondi shark attack
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 15 February, 2009 : - - The family of a surfer whose hand was partially severed in a shark attack at Sydney's Bondi Beach last night has thanked his quick-thinking rescuers, amid calls for more protections for swimmers. The 33-year-old became the second man to be attacked by a shark in Sydney in as many days when he was mauled at the southern end of Bondi Beach about 7:30pm.
A group of surfers pulled the Dover Heights man from the water and gave him first aid with the help of several off-duty doctors and other bystanders, before paramedics arrived. The surfers say the man thought he was going to die and asked them to tell his pregnant wife he loved her, while they wrapped his arm with leg straps from surf boards to try to stop it from bleeding.
One of them, still shaken by the ordeal this morning, said he could not believe his eyes when he first saw the victim. "I thought, 'That can't be his arm ripped off there, or his hand,'" James McIntosh told ABC 702 Local Radio. "I went in closer and sure enough, his hand was just hanging by a small piece of skin."
