    FCS announces Project Green Flex

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 24 February, 2009 : - - Coolangatta -- FCS is proud to announce Project Green Flex; an initiative to introduce a new fin to the surfing industry made from *post-consumer material.  The collaborative effort between FCS and its manufacturing partners has seen the development of a new fin material that maintains the strength and flex properties equal to its revolutionary Glass Flex material, yet has a minimal impact on the environment.

The prerequisite for developing the new material was that it had to have minimal environmental impact and still perform to the same standards as the Glass Flex material. The new material is different because it derives all of its resin from other materials that would otherwise become landfill.

Surf Hardware’s Tyler Callaway commented, “We strongly believe that every business must do what they can to minimize the negative impact of their products and production practices on the planet. Therefore, our decision to create a new material was a no brainer; fins make up the largest component of the business and they also result in the company’s biggest environmental footprint”.

Surf Hardware International, the parent company of FCS, is actively working on different ways to reduce their environmental impact. Callaway continued, “Beyond our own Green Flex project we are stoked to be working with Re Surf and their Green Foam initiative.

We have a long way to go but using significant amounts of post-consumer and post-industrial waste to build high performance surfboards and fins is a great step forward. We have partnered with Re Surf’s surfboard recycling program that will allow consumers and manufacturers to recycle old fins, regardless of the brand”.

The next step for Project Green Flex is to recruit the talents of the surfing industry during the final testing phase. In the coming weeks sample sets of the new Green Flex fin will be distributed for testing. Although initial tests with some of the FCS marquee team riders has returned positive results, FCS is keen to gather feedback from a broader audience. Once the feedback has been collected and verified the fins will immediately hit the market.

Project Green Flex falls under the umbrella of SHI’s Environmental Policy which focuses on a broader ‘Green’ initiative. The policy states the company’s intensions, commitment and principles in the area of environmental management and conservation. SHI is committed to the improvement of environmental performance and creating products and programs with design & sustainable sourcing, carbon management and the use of ethical supply chains.

More information on project Green Flex will be available shortly.

    * Once a material or finished product has served its intended use and has been diverted or recovered from waste destined for disposal, it is then considered "post-consumer”. Having completed its life as a consumer item, it can then be recycled as such.
