Hyundai Malfunction Surf Festival
ASP World Longboard Qualifying Series New Tweed Coast Qld Australia 21 - 29 March 2009
Hyundai Malfunction proving to be more than just a surfing event
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 5 March, 2009 : - - What started in 1984 as an excuse for surfers to get together, the 2009 Hyundai Malfunction Surf Festival has transformed into one of Australia’s premier surfing events and for the first time in its history, will extend to a nine-day festival.
At the core of the competition, hundreds of entrants take to the waves with classic longboards, Stand Up Paddle Boards and retro boards, all vying for a trophy position - but the zest and zeal doesn’t stop in the surf.
Just steps from the sand, a whirlwind of events will surround Domain Casuarina Beach Resort and Kingscliff at this years event - something for the artist, food and wine connoisseur and classic car enthusiast; the 2009 Hyundai Malfunction conjures everything a surf ‘festival’ should be.
Kicking off the festival on Saturday March 21, is the Domain Casuarina Beach Art Exhibition presented by Von Weirdos.
The exhibition will feature ‘The Original Search Engine’, which showcases a collaboration of works by illustrator Darryl Miller and graphic artist Tony Morris. Displaying, a selection of prints on wood featuring classic cars of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s that are layered over old car classified ads and road maps, the exhibition will no doubt be one of the most unique, surf-inspired in Australia.
"The exhibition explores the crossover between the sub-cultural worlds of surf and cars from the late 1950s to the mid 1970s in Australia. It was an exciting period; it was a time of more freedom; it was the when Australia came of age on the waves,” said Darryl Miller. Mr Tony Morris says the dynamic duo has developed a technique that allows them to print each composition on wood or any surface.
“This has enabled us to capture an authentic look and feel of the era. These blasts from the past will send a shiver down many a spine. You can almost smell the hot metal and oil,” he said. There will be over 40 pieces of work and the art exhibition will officially open at 1.30pm at the Conference Centre just outside the popular Sandbar + Grill. Surf acoustic Kym Campbell will be offering some soothing sounds and the afternoon is a perfect way to kick-start the festival.
On Sunday March 22, cool vibes will continue as the Salt Village Surf Vehicle Rally takes to the streets. From ’38 Fords, Woodies, 64 EH Holden’s, VW Van’s and mum’s taxi, retro cars have been a symbol of surf transportation for decades and will form together on Sunday morning at 10am cruise the Coastline checking out all of the surfing hot spots.
“There’s nothing cooler than piling into your Kombi with your mates and cruising the coast looking for waves,” said Kombi Club president Roy Hodgkinson. “It’s a timeless experience.” The vehicle rally is open to the public and thanks to Salt Village, the Kombi Club and the Bus Stop, is free of charge.
“Cars must register on the Sunday morning from 10am at Salt Village, just near the SLSC. The cars will depart at 11am and trophies for the top three vehicles will be awarded,” said event organiser, Sean McKeown. Following the rally, the cars will park at the Sandbar + Grill from 12pm until mid afternoon and guests can enjoy lunch or tappas and an extensive beer and wine list while chilling out to live music by The Real Deal.
On Monday March 23, the Casuarina Beach High Performance Centre will launch its three-day longboard camp with surf coaching for both professional and amateurs wishing to improve their contest surfing.
Competition will commence on the 25th and encompass a number of open amateur and aged divisions for traditional surfers, a leg of the ASP longboard qualifying series for Men & Women, a Retro division for boards constructed prior to 1981 and the fast growing craze of Stand Up Paddle Surfing.
“Throughout the week, much of the daytime socialising will be conducted at the Cudgen SLSC,” said Mr McKeown. “At night time, the Salt Bar at Salt Village will host rock bands and keep the surf spirit alive. However, the main dinner will be held at the Sandbar + Grill on Saturday March 28 with a Hawaiian themed Luau dinner.
“The dinner will feature guest speakers and live entertainment and with award winning Greg Pieper at the helm, it’s definitely one night not to miss.” The Luau dinner is priced at $60 per person and entertainment will be provided by Mal & the Longboarders.
Expecting over 300 entries this year, the surf festival is expected to inject in excess of $2million into the local economy.
