Four Europeans Down, Three to go in Round 3 of Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast    > Francaise ci-dessous

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 7 March, 2009 : - - Snapper Rocks -- After six days off, the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast pres. by LG Mobile recommenced today with Round 2 being held in three-foot (one meter) waves. From the four Europeans who were to compete in the sudden-death round, none managed to come out on top and three representatives only remain in the competition.

German surfer and 2009 ASP World Tour rookie Marlon Lipke (DEU) was the first man to be defeated this morning at Duranbah Beach, going down to an inform Adrian Buchan (AUS) in Heat 3. Lipke, who seemed under pressure, fell to many times in the end of his rides and was not able to catch-up with Buchan’s strong attack of the fast hollow morning waves.

“I felt like I wasn’t relaxed and got the jelly legs again,” Lipke said. “I had some good first turns but then my legs would just not respond anymore and I wasn’t able to finish off well. Still an experience to work on.” Lipke, who was awarded a wildcard by the World Professionals Surfers (WPS), the surfers’ union, will be at all events on tour this year and might create some good surprises when the rookie pressure goes off.

Most expected and seen as this year’s best rookie, Michel Bourez (PYF) suffered a early elimination losing to veteran Dayyan Neve (AUS) later in the day after the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast had moved back to its main venue of Snapper Rocks. Bourez, who had to face a lack of waves during his match-up, did not find the better waves coming through at Snapper and left Neve take the best of the heat to advance through to Round 3.

A former ASP European champion and last year’s ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) No. 3, Bourez still remains a threat to any surfer on tour and will be looking forward to securing a big result when the tour hits its second stop at Bells Beach, a wave that should suit his powerful surfing.

Aritz Aranburu (EUK) and Mikael Picon (FRA) were the two other Europeans to fail today, both exoerienced surfers being defeated respectively by former ASP World Champion CJ Hobgood (USA) and Dream Tour returner Chris “Davo”Davidson).

Aranburu, who ended up with an usual low 10.06 pts heat score at Duranbah Beach, did not look comfortable in Duranbah’s hollow wedges and was ousted by an experienced Hobgood finding a clean backside no-hand barrel to secure his win.

Mikael Picon, 29, a leader of the European contingent running for his thrid year as a member of the ASP Top 45, suffered last year’s ASP WQS No. 2 Chris Davidson’s assaults. Picon, who was surfing on his backhand at Snapper Rocks, managed to net a 12.34 pts total but not enough to best Davo’s solid 16.67 point result. Picon, who finished last year rated No. 21 in the world, missed his season start in the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast but should quickly step up when the tour moves to its next stops.

Jeremy Flores (FRA), Tiago Pires (PRT) and ASP Top 45 rookie Tim Boal (FRA) will paddle out for their Round 3 battles when competition resumes, with a good chance of seeing some action at Snapper Rocks tomorrow Sunday, March 8, after officials reassess conditions at 6 AM.

 Picon et Bourez éliminés,Flores et Boal au 3ème Tour du Quiksilver Pro

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 7 March, 2009 : - - Snapper Rocks -- Après six jours sans compétition en raison de mauvaises conditions de vagues, le deuxième tour du Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast présenté par LG Mobile a pu être lancé aujourd'hui avec les huit premières séries se déroulant à Duranbah Beach et le reste de la journée se tenant sur la fameuse droite de Snapper Rocks.

Malgré beaucoup d'espérances dans le camp français, les deux compétiteurs tricolores engagés au deuxième tour n'ont pas pu passer le cap et Micheal Picon et Michel Bourez se placent donc 33ème  de la première étape de l'ASP World Tour 2009.

Très attendu par ses pairs pour son premier grand test, le tahitien Michel Bourez a manqué sa qualification pour le troisième tour s'inclinant face au trentenaire australien et expérimenté Dayyan Neve (AUS) dans une série d'un niveau décevant dans des conditions de vagues très moyennes. Mauvais timing, peu de réussite dans ses manœuvres, Bourez n'a pas su attendre les meilleures vagues et paye le prix fort pour son départ.

Vu comme le meilleur nouveau venu sur le tour cette année, Bourez demeure cependant une menace de tous les instants pour ses adversaires et il est fort à parier que le tahitien très apprécié du public saura rebondir lors de la second étape à Bells Beach dans le sud de l'Australie.

Micheal Picon, l'autre français en lice pour ce second tour, affrontait le « bad boy » du circuit, Chris Davidson (AUS), qui faisait son grand retour parmi l'élite. Davidson, ancien membre de l'élite mondiale connu pour son style solide et sa personnalité extravertie, a soulevé la foule avec un surf sûr et des manœuvres bien exécutées obtenant au passage un 9 (sur 10) lors de sa dernière vague, lui donnant la victoire sur Picon.

Picon, pour qui commence mal cette troisième année sur l'ASP World Tour, n'a pas démérité surfant dos à la vague (backside) mais n'est pas parvenu à gérer la série comme il le souhaitait, terminant 33ème de ce Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast.

Malgré cette journée choc pour le clan français et européen, l'allemand Marlon Lipke ainsi que le basque espagnol s'étant aussi incliné aujourd'hui, deux français demeurent en lice pour le titre en la personne de Jeremy Flores et Tim Boal, respectivement No. 10 mondial en 2008 et nouveau venu sur le circuit.

Flores, qui affrontera un autre nouveau venu Nic Muscroft (AUS) demain lors du troisième tour, continue de souffrir d'une douleur à la cheville mais compte bien tenter de répéter au moins son résultat de 2008 lors du Quiksilver Pro qui devrait se terminer mercredi 11 mars. Boal, qui a fait très grosse impression lors de son entrée dans la compétition samedi dernier, devra confirmer les espoirs grandissants qui sont mis en lui dans l'avant dernière série du troisième tour face à la tête de série Adrian Buchan, tombeur de Marlon Lipke aujourd'hui.
