Yamakawa Brothers Dominate Hard Rock Cafe Event at Sandy Beach
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 24 March, 2009 : - - Honolulu -- Brothers Kylen and Cole Yamakawa made their parents proud, each posting a win at event 10 of the Hard Rock Cafe Surf Series, presented by the Hawaii Surfing Association at Quiksilver, held this weekend at Sandy Beach, Oahu.
Cole, who is 14 and attends Punahou School, won the Boys division, and 16-year-old, Iolani student Kylen won the highly competitive Junior Mens division. This victory boosts Kylen to the overall season leader of the Junior Men's division. Despite the challenging conditions, Kylen made the best of the windy peaks Full Point offered up at Sandy Beach.
"I got lucky and got one of the few that lined up," Kylen said. "It was real cool [that Cole won the boys]. My parents were really stoked!"
This is the first time that the Yamakawas claimed victories on the same day. According to Kylen, they were going to celebrate with a family dinner, but before any celebrating could take place Kylen had to surf in another surf contest across town at Kewalo Basin. Fortunately, he made his heat at that amateur event, but was exhausted from all the competitive surfing.
"I was really stressed," said Yamakawa. "This was my most stressful day ever. I surfed three heats today. I'm exhausted from paddling so much at Sandy's."
The Yamakawa family had a lot to be proud of and so did the Pendletons. Christian Pendleton finished runner-up behind Kylen in the Junior Mens and Alex Pendleton placed second in the Boys with Cole in front.
