Lewis Samuels’ 'Power Rankings' now on PostSurf.com
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 24 March, 2009 : - - Lewis Samuels, surf journalist and creator of the Power Rankings, will be publishing the next installment of his popular ASP Top 45 critique on PostSurf.com. Samuels’ Power Rankings, formerly available on Surfline.com, have gained notoriety in the surf industry as an unapologetically opinionated and controversial analysis of the world’s top surfers.
“Never has a journalist rattled more surfers’ cages then Lewis Samuels, the man behind Surfline’s Power Rankings,” noted world number 5 CJ Hobgood.
“We have an industry where the people that run ads in the magazines are the same people that sponsor the surfers. So it’s always been a somewhat candy-coated version when these publications write about athletes,” CJ noted. “Lewis is the first to tell it how it is, so with that has come a lot of controversy.”
Some pro surfers have been less appreciative of the Power Rankings. In Stab Magazine, world number 11 Luke Stedman recently said of Lewis Samuels, “I honestly wanted to kill him. He drove a sharp stake into me several times and it fucking hurt… after several therapy sessions at a really expensive, overrated Sydney shrink centre, I changed my train of thought... I used his words to motivate me. Kept a couple of his quotes he wrote about me, put them up on my wall and drew positive energy from it.”
PostSurf.com was started by Lewis Samuels in early 2009, and has quickly become an underground safe-haven for surf culture iconoclasts who are dissatisfied with the current state of the surf media.
Samuels departs Surfline.com in the wake of a number of controversial PostSurf pieces that examined the role advertisers play in shaping editorial content. Barely in its second month, PostSurf has already gained a following amongst surf industry insiders, pros, and hardcore surfers.
CJ Hobgood called PostSurf “probably the most entertaining verbal diarrhea I’ve seen in years. An absolute must read.” With the addition of the Power Rankings, PostSurf.com promises to expand into uncharted surf journalism territory.
