Surfing stars knocked out of the O’Neill Cold Water Classic Tasmania  |  francais en dessous

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 27 March, 2009 : - - Marrawah, Tasmania - Nettles Beach  on Tasmania’s far north west coast was the setting for Day 4 of competition at the O’Neill Cold Water Classic in Tasmania. Yet another quality wave location with chunky 1.5m random peaks setting the scene for round three of competition. 

It was a morning of falling stars as a host of surfing’s big names who had made their way to this remote corner of the world for the O’Neill Cold Water Classic Tasmania, had their stay surprisingly cut short. 

American World Tour surfer, CJ Hobgood, big wave charger Mark Mathews, renowned talent, Cory Lopez, and Basque World Tour surfer, Aritz Aranburu were all knocked out of the round of 48 which took place in rough 4 foot seas at Nettles Bay in Marrawah.

If ever there has been a contest that has capitalised on its mobile format – this is it. The fourth day of competition following a lay day provided yet another new competition venue for the surfers on this northwest corner of Tasmania.  

“I lingered at Bluff Reef this morning for a while,” said contest director Matt Wilson. “We wanted to give that wave every chance, but it just wasn’t consistent enough. It was a situation where it wasn’t big enough for the reef, but it was almost too big for the other locations.” 

“We have six spots to chose from here on the Northwest coast,” said Matt. “There’s Bluff Reef, Bluff Beach, Kelpy’s, Lighthouse, Green’s and Nettle’s. I looked at them all. Nettles was the best of them.”

Although now out of the competition, Sydney surfer and the event’s ambassador, Mark Mathews has been loving his time in Tasmania. “I’ve never been to this part of the state before, so I’ve been loving exploring somewhere new,” he said. “Hopefully after this I’m going to be able to do the whole Cold Water Classic Series.” 

Two surfers who managed to continue through to the round of 24 were South African surfing phenomenon Jordy Smith, as well as CJ’s brother Damien Hobgood, both winning their heats in convincing style.   

“I was excited to come here,” said Damien. “I love surfing to be able to go and travel to new places. When we were up on the Goldie people started talking about how we would need a caravan down here – we started thinking what had we got ourselves into? But these people ended up moving out of their house to let us stay,” he said. “The people here are so incredibly friendly. It really makes a place.”  

The round of 24 will continue tomorrow with the swell dropping slightly towards the afternoon, before a new swell is forecast to come in. The call will be made tomorrow March 28 at 7.30am.

LES STARS S’INCLINENT LORS DE CETTE 5EME JOURNEE DU O’NEILL COLD WATER CLASSIC TASMANIA

27 Mars 2009, Marrawah, Tasmanie – Quelques unes des stars de la discipline qui avaient fait le déplacement jusqu’à ce coin reculé de la Tasmanie, ont vu leur séjour écourté lors de cette 5ème journée du O’Neill Cold Water Classic Tasmanie. 

Les surfeurs du World Tour CJ Hobgood et Aritz Aranburu, le talentueux Cory Lopez et le surfeur de grosses vagues Mark Mathews ont tiré leur révérence dès le tour des 48ème de finale dans des conditions de vagues assez difficiles dans la baie de Nettles à Marrawah.

Encore une fois la logistique a été cruciale sur cette épreuve qui peut vraiment revendiquer d’être la plus mobile du circuit avec un quatrième site de compétition dévoilé en quatre jours. Après une journée de repos hier, les surfeurs ont donc découvert un nouveau spot sur la côte nord-ouest de l’île. 
“Je me suis un peu attardé devant le Bluff ce matin,” a déclaré le directeur de compétition Matt Wilson.

“Nous voulions vraiment revenir sur cette vague mais, malheureusement la houle n’était pas assez consistante. C’est le genre de situation où la houle est trop petite pour un reef et, presque trop grosse pour les autres spots alentour.”

“Nous pouvons choisir entre six spots ici sur la côte nord ouest,” a poursuivi Matt. “Il y a le reef du Bluff, le beachbreak du Bluff, Kelpys, Le Phare, Greens et Nettles. J’ai tous été les voir ce matin. Nettles était le meilleur spot.”

Bien qu’il se soit fait éliminer de la compétition, le surfeur de Sydney Mark Mathews, véritable ambassadeur de cette épreuve, a vraiment apprécié son séjour en Tasmanie. “Je n’étais jamais venu dans cette région de l’Etat et j’ai vraiment apprécié de pouvoir explorer la zone,” a-t-il déclaré. “J’espère qu’après cela je pourrai suivre l’intégralité des épreuves des  Cold Water Classic Series.”

Deux surfeurs de renom ont quand même pu tirer leur épingle du jeu dans ces conditions difficiles : l’impressionnant Sud Africain Jordy Smith ainsi que le frère de CJ ,Damien Hobgood, qui se sont qualifiés pour le tour des 24ème de finale en remportant tous deux leur série respective. 

“J’étais vraiment impatient de venir ici,” a déclaré Damien. “J’adore quand le surf nous permet de voyager vers de nouvelles destinations. Quand nous étions sur la Gold Coast, nous avons réalisé qu’il nous faudrait certainement une caravane ici et on commençait vraiment à se demander dans quoi nous nous étions embarqué !? Mais les gens d’ici nous ont laissé leur maison,” a-t-il déclaré. “Les locaux sont tellement accueillants que cet endroit en devient vraiment à part.”

Le tour des 24ème de finale se poursuivra demain avec une houle en légère baisse dans l’après midi avant qu’un nouveau train de houle arrive en soirée. Rendez vous est pris à  7h30 le 28 mars.
