Damien Hobgood tops action filled day at O’Neill Cold Water Classic Tasmania       > En français ci-dessous

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 March, 2009 : - - Marrawah, Tasmania - The penultimate day of competition at the O’Neill Cold Water Classic Tasmania produced a first in the event’s five-day history – when it was held at the same venue for the second day running. “It took us four days to find this place,” said event director Matt Wilson. “Now we’ve found it, we’re not moving,” he joked.

Damien Hobgood pulled out one of the performances of the entire event in his close heat against Brett Simpson, taking him through to the quarterfinals in style. Jordy Smith is joining Damien as the other World Tour surfer making it comfortably into the quarterfinals, knocking out the young Hawaiian talent, Dusty Payne and setting up what is sure to be a thrilling heat against the Australian wonder-kid Owen Wright.

Despite looking as though he still has a few tricks in the bag to pull out, Jordy says he is giving it his all. “I’m going for it out there,” he said. “It’s lots of fun this competition. I’m hanging out here with my friends, and just having a good time.”

Two Australian’s progressed through today’s round five to go into tomorrow’s quarter finals, South Australia’s Dion Atkinson (Seaford) and NSW young gun Owen Wright (Lennox Head). Another big name in amongst the quarterfinalists is American surfer, Patrick Gudauskas, who narrowly missed out on World Tour place last season.

“My philosophy here is go big or go home,” said Patrick. “I’ve had some good heats – a lot of close heats – but three more heats would be sick,” he said. “My surfing has changed in the three months I just had off,” he said. “It feels like I’m not afraid to fall any more. Also I have a few tricks and secret maneuvers to pull out when I need!”

“I am loving it here in Tasmania,” said Patrick. “For a contest it’s exciting because no one has the local advantage. Also the locals are rad. They’re giving me advice about where to sit and stuff, and then the same guys are popping up to congratulate me after each heat. It’s classic.” “The waves have also been incredible,” he said. “We surfed The Bluff so good. I fell in love with that wave. It was pretty special.”

With just the final rounds remaining, the hope is that the event will end and have its last day at the notorious Bluff Reef. “There’s another swell on the map,” said Matt Wilson. “And lighter winds forecast for tomorrow, so it looks like a better day all round. The Bluff needs a solid 4 meter swell to work. We’ll see tomorrow morning if we get it.

LA COMPETITION DE SURF LA PLUS AU SUD, LA PLUS SAUVAGE, LA PLUS GLACIALE DE LA PLANETE

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 March, 2009 : - - Tasmanie  -- Cette avant dernière journée du O’Neill Cold Water Classic Tasmanie a pour la première fois de sa courte histoire eu lieu sur le même site de compétition deux jours de suite. “Il n’aura fallu quatre jours pour trouver cet endroit,” a déclaré Matt Wilson le directeur de compétition. “Maintenant que nous l’avons trouvé, on ne va plus bouger,” a-t-il plaisanté.

Damien Hobgood a été l’auteur de l’une des plus belles prestations de la compétition dans sa série face à Brett Simpson, qui lui a permis de se qualifier et de se positionner comme favoris pour les quarts de finale.
 
Jordy Smith rejoindra Damien car cet autre surfeur du World Tour s’est facilement qualifié pour les quarts de final en disposant du jeune hawaiien Dusty Payne. Jordy sera opposé à l’une des stars de la nouvelle génération australienne,Owen Wright dans ce qui promet d’être une série très intéressante.


Même s’il semble que le sud africain ai gardé quelques tricks dans son jeu pour les phases finales, Jordy déclare qu’il donne tout ce qu’il a. “Je suis à fond à l’eau,” a-t-il déclaré. “Cette compétition est très fun. Je suis ici avec mes amis et je passe vraiment un bon moment.”

Un autre nom à retenir pour ces quarts de finales, celui du surfeur américain Patrick Gudauskas, qui avait manqué de peu sa qualification pour le World Tour la saison dernière. “Ma tactique ici est de tout donner ou de rentrer chez moi,” a déclaré Patrick. “J’ai eu quelques bonnes séries – beaucoup de séries très serrées – mais encore trois serait fabuleux,” a-t-il conclu. 

“Mon surf a changé durant les trois mois de pause,” a-t-il déclaré. “J’ai l’impression de ne plus avoir peur de tomber. J’ai aussi quelques tricks bien en place et une manœuvre secrète à dévoiler quand j’en aurai besoin !”

“J’adore la Tasmanie,” a poursuivi Patrick. “Pour une compétition c’est excitant car personne n’a l’avantage du terrain. Les locaux sont aussi super ici. Ils me donnent des conseils sur où attendre la série etc. Et ce sont les mêmes qui viennent me féliciter après chaque série. C’est vraiment sympa.”
“Les vagues ont été vraiment incroyables ici,” a-t-il déclaré. “Nous avons eu un très bon Bluff. Je suis tombé amoureux de cette vague. Cela a été un moment assez spécial.”

Il ne reste plus que les phases finales et tout le monde espère que la compétition se terminera là où elle a commencé, sur le célèbre reef du Bluff. “Il y a une autre houle en approche,” a déclaré Matt Wilson. “Et des vents plus faibles prévus pour demain, cela promet donc une belle journée pour les finales. Le Bluff a besoin d’une houle de 2m pour marcher. On verra bien demain matin si elle est là.
