Joan Duru Wins ASP WQS 4-Star Protest Vendee Pro to Lead European Ratings          > En français ci-dessous

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 12 April, 2009 : - - La Sauzaie -- Joan Duru (Ondres, FRA), 19, won the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) 4-Star Protest Vendee Pro today after defeating Australian surfer Lincoln Taylor in the final encounter of the 2009 event. Duru, who took advantage of the tricky three foot (one meter) waves breaking at La Sauzaie, stole the crown from Taylor with a last minute wave, the French man clinching the valuable 1500 ratings’ points counting for the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) International and regional ratings and US$ 12 000 for his run.

Duru, who dominated the quarterfinals and semifinals Satruday, came out on top in a nerve-racking battle until a last-minute exchange that saw him get the lead back and secure his win with an 8.50 point ride (out of a possible 10). The 19-year-old competitor, seen as France’s next best chance for a Dream Tour qualification, unleashed his powerful back and forehand assaults to post a 16.33 point heat result (out of a possible 20) on his way to victory.

“I am over the moon right now and so happy to get that win,” Duru said. “It was such a tough heat with so fewer waves coming-in and it was really close. I got that good 7.83 in the beginning and just waited for twenty-five minutes until I relaized I had to go for anything to get the score and win. I didn’t surf that lastwave at my best but got the score and finished with that 8.50 pointer.”

Duru, who adds a second ASP WQS title to his young career after his first win a couple of years ago in Portugal and an ASP European Junior Crown as well as a runner-up finish in the ASP WQS 5-Star Zarautz event last year, confirms his rise amongst surfing’s current leaders and is targeting a qualification for next year’s ASP World Tour.

“I am targeting the ASP World Tour so I wanted that win to get the momentum and start the year off with a good result,” Duru said. “I had a good run last year on the ASP WQS so I believe I can go for the ASP Top 45.”  Duru’s win rockets him to No. 7 on the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) and places him on top of the ASP WQS European Tour before the upcoming ASP WQS 6-Star Estoril Quiksilver Coast Pro.

Lincoln Taylor (North Stradbroke Island, AUS), 20, finished runner-up in the Protest Vendee Pro securing his best result to date missing out top honours after leading the battle for twenty minutes. Taylor, who went through six heats with several close finishes and a win over Marc Lacomare (FRA) in the Semifinals, ended his 2009 run with an average 12.37 point heat result and takes home US$ 6 000and a great confidence boost before moving on to the next event in Portugal.

“It was hard out there and Joan (Duru) definitely won that heat,” Taylor said. “I surfed the waves I could get but he got the better ones. It is my best result ever so I am happy with that runner-up finish and I hope I can keep up the good job in the next events.”

7EME JOUR DU PROTEST VENDEE PRO : LE FRANCAIS JOAN DURU REMPORTE LE PROTEST VENDEE PRO 2009

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 12 April, 2009 : - - La Sauzaie -- Le Français originaire des Landes, Joan Duru, bientôt 20 ans, remporte le Protest Vendée Pro à Brétignolles-sur-Mer, 1ère étape européenne du Championnat du Monde de Surf Professionnel (ASP). Duru, mené au score pendant toute sa finale face à l'australien Lincoln Taylor, décroche une vague longue qu'il exploite au maximum pour décrocher un 8,5 points, lui ouvrant les portes de la victoire. Il empoche les 12000 $ de prize money et ajoute 1500 points à son classement mondial.

La finale est précédée d'une expression session locale où les membres du Bréteam Club ont l'unique occasion de partager leur spot de la Sauzaie face à l'élite mondiale. A ce jeu, le néozélandais Richard Christie réalise un "  Air Reverse " et empoche les 500$ du Trophée de la ville de Brétignolles-sur-Mer.

L'ultime série de cette étape française du tour WQS, débute à 17h00 pile, moment idéal où la marée recouvre le reef vendéen, tout comme le public qui se masse sur la terrasse de la Sauzaie à Brétignolles-sur-Mer. Les vagues, sérieusement atténuées ce matin, gonflent à mesure que l'eau monte pour atteindre les 5 pieds (1,5 mètres).

Le combat en man-on-man, nom du format en surf où deux concurrents s'affrontent, est un véritable duel de manoeuvres. Joan débute très bien sa série en affichant un 7,83 points, mais se fait rattraper par l'australien Taylor assez rapidement. Duru accuse un passage à vide pendant que Taylor enchaîne les vagues et les scores.

Compétiteur hors norme, Joan Duru décroche une vague dans les 5 dernières minutes à 6,60 puis à 8,50 à moins de 2 minutes de la fin. "  Je suis trop content, je voulais gagner mais je ne m'y attendais pas. " dit-il sous l'émotion. Il rajoute : " Ce matin j'étais un peu déçu quand j'ai vu que la houle était tombée car je m'exprime mieux dans du gros comme hier.

Ma série a bien commencé et j'ai écouté Marc (ndlr : Lacomare, demi-finaliste) qui m'a conseillé d'attendre patiemment la meilleure vague pour scorer, car la finale dure 35 minutes. Mais cette vague ne vient pas et je commence à stresser. Heureusement je décroche une petite vague tendue, et j'enchaîne avec une seconde juste derrière où j'ai tout donné pour ramer et l'attrap er.

" Ce compétiteur a la rage de vaincre ; il l'a prouvé déjà l'an dernier à Hossegor où il gagne sa série contre le 9 fois champion du Monde Kelly Slater. Nul doute que Joan va porter haut les couleurs de la France, vu son ambition d'être sur le WCT l'an prochain. En attendant il doit enchaîner les WQS, et il prend cette tâche avec une certaine philosophie amicale ;

" Lincoln Taylor est un ami de Marc Lacomare, mon compagnon de voyage sur l'ensemble des compétitions. Nous avons sympathisé et c'est marrant de se retrouver en finale ! Du coup, on va suivre le tour professionnel ensemble car il est vraiment cool, et en plus il fracasse !!! ".

Prochaine étape du calendrier ASP le 19 avril à Durban en Afrique du Sud, et prochain retour des pros en France du 13 au 23 août à Lacanau (33 - Gironde).
