OXBOW South African Longboard Championships start in Port Elizabeth on Monday
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 12 April, 2009 : - - Cape Town, South Africa -- The OXBOW South African Longboard Championships presented by Malibu gets underway in Port Elizabeth on Monday where the first two days of competition will be held before the event moves to Jeffreys Bay, the Mecca of SA surfing, from Wednesday until the finals in all divisions are completed on Saturday 18 April.
Starting with an opening function for all competitors and officials at the Hobie Club in PE on Sunday evening, the event is contested over six days by provincial teams from defending champions Western Province, hosts Eastern Province, KwaZulu-Natal and newcomers Southern Cape in 13 age categories, three of which are for females, and ends with the awards function in Jeffreys Bay next Saturday evening.
“Oxbow is very proud to be sponsoring this event and especially excited that it will be taking place in Jeffreys Bay, the venue for the Oxbow World Longboarding Championship event in 2001,” said Lyndal Watt, spokesperson for Oxbow, a leading European based Surfwear Brand that launched on the shores of South Africa last year.
Oxbow team rider Matthew Moir (Cape Town), the reigning two-time ISA World Longboard Champion and defending champion in the Open division of the Oxbow SA Longboard Championships, is looking forward to the week ahead and testing his skills against the top longboarders from around the country despite having suffered a stroke earlier this year.
“I have been practicing hard but I’m not as fluid on my backhand as I was before the stroke, so it’s going to be interesting to see how I go in the right breaking waves at The Point in Jeffreys Bay,” said Moir, a goofy-foot surfer who rides with his right foot in front. “I wasn’t going to enter because I couldn’t make it to the trials for the Western Province team, but there was a spot open in the new Southern Cape squad so I’m really happy to get the chance to compete at the highest level before I go overseas for the international events later this year.”
Moir, 31, will compete in the premier Open division even though he qualifies for the Masters category (30-35 years) and will be up against the likes of former SA Open champions Tyrone Jensen (2007) and Dylan Macleod (2006) along with perennial standouts Thomas King (SC), William Wallace, Jono Rosslind and Justin Bing (all WP), Michael Hill (EP) and Brad Weare (KZN).
Mark Theunissen (WP) will be back to defend his 2008 Masters title, as will Craig Potgieter (EP) in the Grand Masters, David Stubbs (WP) in the Seniors, Gary van Rooyen (WP) in the Veterans, Des Sawyer (EP) in the Supervets, Greg Stokes (WP) in the Legends and Steve Sawyer (EP) in the Young Boys (Under 15). Roxy Towill will be joined in defending her Women’s crown by Faye Zoetmulder (EP) in the Girls (U18) and Phillipa Hill in the Senior Women (over 35). New champions will be crowned in the Junior Men (U18) and the Super Legends (Over 60).
Benjamin de Castro and Roger Vuanza, members of the Muizenberg based NPO, Palama Metsi Development Surfing Academy, which is supported by Oxbow, have qualified for the Western Province team on merit and will be competing in the Young Boys and Junior divisions respectively.
