Travis Logie Looking Forward to Home Break Advantage at 2009 Quiksilver Pro Durban
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 15 April, 2009 : - - Durban -- South African surfer Travis Logie is looking forward to contesting the 2009 Quiksilver Pro Durban, a six star prime Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) event scheduled to take place at his local spot, New Pier, Durban, from 17-26 April.
As a former ISA World Champion and member of the elite World Championship Tour member for four years, Logie is one of the strongest local contenders to take home the title and the US$20,000 first place prize, and will be drawing on all his experience from years of surfing the long right-hand waves of New Pier. "New Pier is one of my favourite waves in the world," says Logie, "and I've always enjoyed competing in events there. The vibe between the piers with the crowd on the beach is always good, and the waves are usually amazing. I'm really excited for this year's event." Having married long time girlfriend and top model Shauna Schijf this past weekend, Logie will be looking to follow up what he described as "the best day of his life" during his wedding speech with another great performance over the next few weeks of surfing competition.
But with the Quiksilver Pro Durban having the highest possible WQS rating, Logie will come up against a host of South Africa and the world's best surfers as they descend on New Pier to challenge for their share of the US$145,000. "The Quiksilver Pro Durban has always been good to the local surfers," says Quiksilver marketing manager Dane Patterson. "At the inaugural event in 2007 Jordy Smith placed second and the result launched his campaign to qualify for the 2008 WCT.
Similarly last year David Weare took home the title and went on to qualify for this year's WCT. So the local boys understand the importance of a result in Durban, and Travis in particular is hungry to requalify after being knocked off after four years on the tour after suffering a knee injury." Logie's woes began in July 2007 when he sustained a knee injury at the Billabong Pro in Jeffreys Bay and had to withdraw from the remaining 2007 events. Tragically Logie was lying tenth on the elite tour at the time, the highest a South African has ever climbed to on the ratings ladder.
Awarded an injury wildcard for the 2008 WCT, Logie was still plagued by the injury and the lost training time and found himself relegated back to the WQS in 2009. But having now made a full recovery word is that the lithe goofy-footer is stronger and more determined than ever, and announced his return to the world when he took out the title at the Mark Richards Pro in Newcastle, Australia in March this year. However, with surfers of the calibre of defending champion Weare, 2009 WCT member Greg Emslie (East London), 2008 WCT surfers Royden Bryson (Cape Town) and Ricky Basnett (Bluff), and Virgin Mobile Wild Cards Brandon Jackson and Daniel Redman in the running, Logie will have his work cut out for him.
Similarly the list of international surfers in attendance includes current WCT number nine Jihad Khodr (Brazil), fellow WCT campaigners Ben Dunn (Australia) and Drew Courtney (USA), current WQS number two Jean da Silva (Brazil), former world champion Sunny Garcia (Hawaii), 2008 Quiksilver Pro Durban runner-up Austin Ware (USA) and Australian free surfing maestro Julian Wilson.

Although scheduled to be held at New Pier, due to the unreliability of the surf conditions the Quiksilver Pro Durban event organisers have made arrangements to move the contest out to Ansteys Beach on the Bluff if the need arises. The total prize money for the main event is US$145,000 with the winner walking away with US$20,000 and, more importantly, 3500 WQS ratings points. Two other exciting aspects of the Quiksilver Pro Durban will be the incorporation of the Quiksilver Pro Junior and the Komunity Project Future Stars events. The Quiksilver Pro Junior is an ASP Grade 2 Junior event that will see some of the world's top junior surfers competing for US$10,000 in prize money and ratings points that will count towards the crowning of the 2009 ASP World Junior Champion.
The Komunity Project Future Stars event will showcase the progress that is being made in the transformation of the sport of surfing in South Africa and is due to take place on Friday 17 April. Eight junior surfers will be selected from Surfing South Africa's transformation and development program and flown in to Durban where they will be accommodated by Komunity Project. These surfers will then compete against each other in an exclusive surf-off giving them the opportunity to win a wildcard into the Quiksilver Pro Junior as well as a one year sponsorship from Komunity Project. Keeping in line with the latest technological developments, the Quiksilver Pro Durban will include a live webcast on quikprodurban.com that will attract a host of viewers from around the world.
The webcast will feature live footage and score updates in real time, and will be punctuated by commentary from some of world surfing's most respected voices, among them 1989 World Champion and former Durban local Martin Potter. Results, daily images, highlight video’s, surfer profiles and more can also be found on the event website.
