OXBOW South African Longboard Championships underway at Jeffreys Bay
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 16 April, 2009 : - - Cape Town -- The OXBOW South African Longboard Championships presented by Malibu moved to Jeffreys Bay on Wednesday where competitors enjoyed pristine head-high waves at The Point for Day 3 of the country’s premier annual longboard surfing event.
Following the first two days of action in Port Elizabeth, SA’s top longboarders reveled in the classic conditions at JBay as long walls of water poured down the rocky point, providing the ideal medium for a combination of traditional and high performance modern manoeuvres that earn the highest points from the judges.
Competitors from defending team champions Western Province, hosts Eastern Province, KwaZulu-Natal and newcomers Southern Cape are competing for the coveted SA provincial title and individual honours in 13 age categories ranging from early teens to over 60, including three women’s divisions.
The premier Open men’s category saw reigning two-time ISA World Champion Matthew Moir slump to an uncharacteristic fourth place in his opening heat on Monday. But the defending SA Champ roared back into contention, winning his repecharge heat and then posting a master class in longboard competition to clinch his Round 3 encounter and progress to the quarterfinals.
Moir is joined in the last 12 of the Open division by luminaries such as Southern Cape teammates Thomas King and Tyrone Jensen, Brad Trickett (KZN), Justin Bing (WP) and EP’s Michael Hill and Dylan McLeod.
Defending champion Mark Theunissen (WP) was eliminated in Round 3 of the Masters and the new champion will come from the likes of Michael Grendon (WP), Ryan Anderson (EP), Brad Weare (KZN) or one of the other semifinalists.
Eastern Province have three competitors through to the semifinals of the Supervets and Veterans while the six remaining to contest the Senior Men and Grandmasters are evenly split between the hosts and Western Province. Amongst the women, Southern Cape prodigy Bianca Buitendag is in still contention for both the Girls and Open women’s titles with all four WP team members in the Girls having reached the last six who are in the semifinals.
Roger Vuanza (Juniors) and Benjamin de Castro (Boys), the two Muizenberg based surfers from the Palama Metsi Development Surfing Academy, which is supported by Oxbow, have reached the quarterfinals of their respective divisions.
The Oxbow SA Longboard Championships run until Saturday when the winners in all divisions and South Africa’s top provincial team will be crowned at an awards ceremony after the finals in Jeffreys Bay.
