Al Hunt examines significance of Parko's double opener
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 20 April, 2009 : - - Coolangatta -- Congratulations to Joel Parkinson for making it two in a row to start the tour year off in great waves at the Rip Curl Pro at Bell’s.
Mark Richards was first to achieve this feat in 1979, followed by Cheyne Horan in 1982, Hans Hedemann in 1983, Tom Carroll in 1985, Tom Curren in 1986 and 1990, Kelly Slater in 1997, 2006, 2008, Sunny Garcia in 2000.
All these surfers except Horan and Hedemann went on to win the ASP World Title from that start, so will this be Parko’s year? Tom Curren is the only surfer to make it three in a row back in 1990, so let’s see if Parko can equal that record or even better make it four in a row.
There have been no other events run this past week, but currently we have the ASP Pro Juniors and ASP WQS in Durban at the 6-Star Prime Quiksilver Pro Durban and in Portugal at the Estoril Quiksilver Pro 2009 a 6_Star ASP WQS and junior event also. A big week for Quiksilver.
No changes to the ASP WQS ratings of course, but with a Prime and 6-Star this week, there should be some major changes coming up.
The ASP WQS ratings are still as below: Melling,Adam AUS Simpson,Brett USA Atkinson,Dion AUS Ross,Daniel AUS Paulino,Pablo BRA Polo,Marco BRA Duru,Joan FRA Wright,Owen AUS Zubizarreta,Gony ESP Silva,Jean da BRA
That’s all for this week. Get ready for the ball to drop next Monday. Regards, Al Hunt ASP WQS Tour Manager
