Two Jamaican juniors win ISA scholarships
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 23 April, 2009 : - - Two of Jamaica’s junior surfers, Garren Pryce and Leon McKenzie, are to be recipients of International Surfing Association (ISA) scholarships. The Jamaicans were selected among 40 awardees from over 80 applicants who submitted applications from around the world based on surfing ability, attitude, academic efforts and ambitions. Each awardee receives a new custom surfboard and US$1,200.00 to be used for travel, school and/or surf equipment purchase.
This makes the third time Jamaicans have received scholarships in as many years that the ISA has offered these scholarships. In 2007 Imani Wilmot was one of five inaugural recipients with Ackeam Phillips being awarded a scholarship in 2008 when the program was expanded to reward 20 applicants.
“This is wonderful news for these children as both are good kids. Garren is a member of Jamaica’s National Junior Surf Team and Leon is a beginner surfer with a responsible and positive attitude” said JSA President Billy Wilmot. “It is good that these young Jamaicans have benefited from surfing in this way. Usually athletes involved in a sport only get access to opportunities if they attain a ranking in the top 5-10% . Due to the selection criteria of this program offered by the ISA, the benefits are open to all young surfers.”
