Man about the globe Robbie Warden catches frothy Victoria

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 27 April, 2009 : - - Sunday 26th April kicked up an almighty 40 knot + wind from the west-north-west bringing with it gusts exceeding 60 knots, rain and surprisingly sunshine in the afternoon. Usually for Mornington Peninsula (Victoria) surfers this means head to Flinders-Pt.Leo for some protection on the Western Port Bay waves that saw the stiff off shores and medium swell hit at about 2-4ft.

Best thing about this WNW wind direction is surfing howling onshore waves inside Port Phillip Bay, at Mornington. It's the novelty of surfing here that makes it fun, the difficulty to get the car door open (or close, thanks to my mate who bent the hinge), watching surfers cross the street and the walk down the beach trying to not let the board fly away.

Then once in the water the hurricane force winds stinging your eyes and face with wave spray of toxic water & rain, the deafening screams of squalls coming every few minutes hiding away under each wave as you duck dive. But the real stoke comes from being out there, in the Bay, surfing with your mates, hooting each wave and making the most of these storms that only occur every few months.

Local surfer Jack Winter, Frankston (pictured out front of the Royal Hotel) said he "couldn't really see, but it was really fun, the boys are in the pub watching. I'm going to go home warm up and head out for another".

Arriving at Mornington Pier on sunset there was a crowd over 100 strong of photo enthusiasts, wild weather lovers and die-hard fisherman. Sean Tuckett drove from Sorrento to chase the swell arrived at the pier looking for a possible wave inside the harbor opted for some break-wall barrels exploding 10m+ into the air. "That was amazing, if I had stood up I would have been knocked off my feet! Its so powerful" Sean said.

The excitement and hunt lead me searching throughout the stretch from Mornington to Safety beach with many untapped waves on offer. We'll just have to wait till the weather warnings sound for yet another bay bash.
