Good surf predicted for start of 6.0 Lowers Pro at Trestles

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 27 April, 2009 : - - San Clemente -- Wavewatch.com, the official forecaster of the 6.0 Lowers Pro and Oakley Pro Junior at Lower Trestles, San Clemente, Calif., predicts contestable conditions for the beginning of competition tomorrow and throughout the contest which runs through Saturday, May 2.

According to Forecaster Adam Wright, Tuesday will bring:

    · A mix of fading S swell (180-190), local NW windswell, and a new SW swell (200-220) that is slowly going to fill in through the day...eventually peaking overnight into Wednesday. Look for surf in the waist-chest high range on most sets with some shoulder high waves sneaking through on the lower tides.

    · Cloudy and overcast conditions will persist throughout the day. There will be a bit of coastal eddy as well with light onshore to light S winds around 5 knots in the morning, and some possible cleanup around midmorning. NW winds around 10-13 knots moves in through the afternoon.

    · Overall, semi-playful, Lowers conditions with a touch of wind bump. Best surf will likely be through midmorning as the new swells starts to fill in, the tide slowly raises, and the winds start to shift around.

For the long-range forecast, Wright predicts:

    · Fairly similar surf for the next several days as the small SW swell (200-220) and local windswell continues to mix together. The SW’er will peak on Wed. with chest-shoulder high sets and then slowly fade through Thurs. A second small SW swell (200-220) will arrive on Fri. (5/1) and peak into Sat. for the finals. This swell will be similar in size with mostly chest high surf and some shoulder high sets on the lower tides.

    · The mix of light to moderate coastal eddy conditions will continue for the next several days as well. Right now it looks like Tues. will be a bit bumpier than the rest of the week. Conditions will clean up Wed./Thurs., but the eddy has the potential to return on Fri.

The 6.0 Lowers Pro is the first-ever Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) 6-Star PRIME on the Mainland U.S., and the ASP Grade-2 Oakley Pro Junior is the only U.S. qualifier for the Oakley Pro Junior Global Challenge.

The stacked field of 128 competitors in the 6.0 Lowers Pro will vie for a $145,000 prize purse, including $20,000 and 3,500 points for first place, the most ASP WQS ratings points possible. Also up for grabs, a wildcard into the Hurley Pro World Tour Trials for Trestles, which will be held at the Hurley U.S. Open, July 18-19, in Huntington Beach, Calif. The WQS surfer with the top result at the 6.0 Lowers Pro will be awarded a wildcard into the Trials for a chance to earn a spot into the only World Tour event on the Mainland U.S.A.

The ASP Grade-2 Oakley Pro Junior unites 48 juniors (20 years and younger) battling for a $10,000 prize purse and two coveted qualifying spots into the Oakley Pro Junior Global Challenge in Bali. This will be the only U.S. qualifier for the prominent event, which gained notoriety last year due to its massive prize purse, professional format, and high caliber of qualifier location selections. Concurrently, the South Africa qualifier is in Port Alfred, South Africa, May 1-3. The series will also make stops in Brazil, Japan and France offering a total cumulative prize purse of $165,000 with $75,000 for the final event including an impressive $20,000 for first-place.

All five days of the world-class event will be webcast live at nike6lowerspro.com and an enhanced quality webcast will be available for the final two days exclusively at fuel.tv.  The additional webcast, that rivals broadcast quality, is thanks to a unique partnership between Action Sports Group and FUEL TV, the only network dedicated to the lifestyle of action sports.
