Billabong, Hunter, V.W. British Schools Champs go big
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 29 April, 2009 : - - Challenging conditions awaited contestants at the British Schools contest at Woolacombe in North Devon. Over 200 School children had entered the British Schools Surfing Championships, from across the South West, England Wales and the Channel Islands.
Saturday had challenging conditions with a good 5 foot swell and very strong cross winds, under 16s and 18s boys surfed to the ¼ finals and the girls completed one round. Most of the British team were in attendance and surfed well throuout the day. Thanks must go to VW for supplying a hospitality suite keeping tabulators dry.
Sunday had 2 foot swell and clean conditions with sunny skies standouts were Matt Chapman making two finals, Longboard and under 16s, Max Tucker making finals in the under 16s and under 18s, Karma Worthington, Girls final and longboard Final. Stephen Hall also was impressive in the U16’s & U18’s Body board finals.
The first final to hit the water was the longboard final; Jerseys Matt Chapman showed style and control and held out for the win against strong challenges from Huw Bentley, Karma Worthington and Andrew Wheeler.
This year the Body board divisions saw an increase in talent and numbers with some impressive manoeuvres being pulled. Stephen Hall from Roseland beat Jack Hughes from Newquay Tretherras in the U16’s final. In the U18’s final saw a close fought battle between Hall and Nat McCabe from Bournemouth with just a point between them. The girls Body board saw Flora Lawton beat Tabitha Fox.

The Girls Final had the return of Gwen Spurlock after a long period out of contests she put in a great performance to finish in second place, But the day belonged to an inform Karma Worthington who surfed strong thought the contest to take the win. The under 14s, Miles Lee Hargraves made it the second year in a row to take the title, closely followed by William Bailey, who at only ten years old showed surfing well above his years
Under 16s Had some great surfing from all, Max Tucker needing a second high score could not find the wave he needed finishing in 3rd leaving a close battle for Beau Bromen and Matt Chapman, Matt got his second 1st place making the journey from Jersey well worth while.
The main event, the under 18s boys, the lead changed hands several times in the end local boy Stuart Campbell just out pointed a strong challenge from Porthcawls Max Tucker to take the win with Toby Donachie finishing in 3rd and Leon Mansfield taking 4th.
Jo Hillman of the B.S.A who was contest director said “I would like to thank the staff and especially the judges who handled the challenging weather conditions, and Sue & Alan Black from Parkin Estate who made this event possible.”
