An All-Cunningham Affair on Opening Day of Bradnam’s Windows and Doors Agnes Fest
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 2 May, 2009 : - - The big guns of the Discovery Coast surfing scene fired to life at Agnes Water today, with the Bradnam’s Windows and Doors Agnes Water Longboard Festival getting underway in rising 2ft (0.5-0.7m) beach break waves. And they didn’t disappoint, shelling out a full artillery of manoeuvres across day one of competition.
Round one of the open men and women, over 35 men and women, under 18 boys and girls, as well as the over 50 men were completed before competition was halted at 12 noon to take advantage of tomorrow morning’s low-tide conditions.
Bundaberg young gun George Cunningham began his open men’s title defence in style, recording a 15.00 (out of a possible 20) combined two-wave total to beat Jason Tulk (Bundaberg), Issac McBryde (Yeppoon) and Daniel Clarke (Innes Park) in their opening round heat.
The Bargara product let off a load of high-scoring, classy moves to net a 6.83 and backed it up with an even better 8.17 to breeze through to round two. There he’ll face his father, Glen, who progressed behind Tannum Sands Clinton Farlow in heat two of the round. Post heat, Cunningham said he’s excited to go head-to-head against his father in the next round.
“The pressure is on to do well, but I’m confident that I can outdo him... We surf together all the time, so it’s business as usual. I can’t wait till tomorrow”
Cunningham’s twin brother, Ed, continued the family affair, bagging a heat-winning 15.66 total to storm through to the next round of the open men’s division. He also exacted revenge on his brother, edging out George’s 11.33 total to his 13.67 in round one of the U/18 boys.
Other big opening round winners included Simone Monte (Bulimba) in the open and over 35 women’s divisions, along with Graeme Jenkin (Bargara) in the over 50 men’s and Sarah Whan (Bargara) in the U/18 girls. The three-day, long weekend event is designed to be a really social affair, but is also a perfect event for Discovery Coast locals to have their first crack at competition surfing.
Adding to the festival’s already high stakes is the large surf party and social night held at the Kahunas Pizza Bar and Grill from 6pm tonight. Divisions include: Under 18 girls, Over 35 women, Over 35 men, Over 50 men, Open Women Longboard, Open Men Longboard, Stand Up Paddle, Under 18 boys.
The festival will culminate with a team’s competition between the three northern region clubs (Tide N Turn, Pacifique and Sea Q). The Bradnam’s Windows and Doors Agnes Water Longboard Festival is proudly supported by Gladstone Regional Council, SEA FM, Aquasun, WAECO, Tooheys Extra Dry and ALB Magazine.
