Discovery Coast Surfers Blitz Field on Finals Day at Bradnam's Windows and Doors Agnes Water Longboard Festival!
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 May, 2009 : - - The future of the Discovery Coast surfing scene is in good hands, with competitors going head-to-head for silverware on finals day at the Bradnam’s Windows and Doors Agnes Water Longboard Festival today.
After a successful introduction last year, the second annual event yet again wrapped up without a hitch, assisted by a talent-packed field of surfers from Yeppoon to Bundaberg, fun size waves and fierce competition. A rise in swell overnight allowed contest organisers to continue with finals day, as competitors tore the rising 2-3 ft (0.5-0.8) beach break peaks to pieces.
Bargara young gun Ed Cunningham is well on the way to longboard stardom, exacting revenge on his twin brother George to bag the blue ribbon open men’s division title. In 2008, George slid into the record books as the inaugural open men’s champion, upstaging his brother ED, who could only muster a fourth place finish in the final.
But ED made sure history didn’t repeat today, defying a surfing onslaught to finish in line honours with an 11.16 two-wave combined total, narrowly ahead of George, who scored an 11.07 total, with Bundaberg’s Jason Tulk in third and the twins father Glen in fourth.
Post final, Ed said he was excited to bag a win in a ‘Cunningham-stacked’ final. “I really wanted to win the open title after my brother (George) won it last year,” he said. “I knew it was going to be a tight final with both George and Glen in the mix, so I just gave it my best shot. I’m so happy.”
The Cunningham’s continued their form into the age division finals, with Glen taking a win in the over 35 men’s, before George turned the tables on ED to claim the numero-uno position in the under 18 boys. Apart from the Cunningham’s, Baraga’s Sarah Whan (Under 18 girls) and Graeme Jenkin (Over 50 men) showed that the Discovery Coast is a breeding ground for hot surfing talent.
Also victorious today was Brisbane-based surfer Simone Montie (Bulimba), who was crowned champion in both the open women and over 35 women’s divisions. Surfing Queensland CEO Craig Harland said the event was to continue as a fixture on the Surfing Queensland event calendar.
“After another successful event, we’re sure to be back bigger and better next year,” he said. Adding to the festival’s already high stakes was a large surf party and social night held at the Kahunas Pizza Bar and Grill on Saturday night.
Divisions included: Under 18 girls, Over 35 women, Over 35 men, Over 50 men, Open Women Longboard, Open Men Longboard, and Under 18 boys.
The festival culminated with a team’s competition between the three northern region clubs (Tide N Turn, Pacifique and Sea Q). Bargara-based Pacifique came away with the spoils, and in the process, won five cartons of the clean crisp taste of Tooheys Extra Dry.
The Bradnam’s Windows and Doors Agnes Water Longboard Festival is proudly supported by Gladstone Regional Council, SEA FM, Aquasun, WAECO, Tooheys Extra Dry and ALB Magazine.
