CARLOS MUÑOZ IS COSTA RICA’S NEW NATIONAL SURF CHAMPION      > Espanol abajo

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 4 May, 2009 : - - In a surprise twist, that had rankings leader Jason Torres (Jaco) falling of the semifinals, 16-year-old Carlos Muñoz carved out waves, and made history at this past weekend’s Gran Final Terraza – Reef date of the Curcuito Nacional de Surf DAYSTAR 2008-2009 presented by Coca-Cola Zero in Playa Hermosa.

With Torres out, the youngster Muñoz made it all the way to the Open final heat, won it, and grabbed the 2008-2009 Costa Rica National Costa Rica Surf Championship title. The win was culmination of a hat-trick for Muñoz, as the surfer from Esterillos also won the Championship titles for the Junior and Boys categories as well.

The situation in the Open was that Torres needed to reach at least 5th place in this date to earn the national title, but in his semifinal heat, the surfer couldn’t find the waves, and came in 4th place. With Torres situated at 7th in the Gran Finals Terraza – Reef, this opened a window for Jaco’s Jairo Pérez and Muñoz to fight for the championship with the points earned with the 6 stars of the date.

Only Muñoz obtained the luxury of advancing from the semifinals that included Pérez, Gilbert Brown (Puerto Viejo), Diego Naranjo (Jaco), as Pérez fell back with Brown, and Naranjo moved ahead with him.  The semifinal 2 was run with Juan Carlos Naranjo (Jaco), Torres, Matías Braun (Montezuma) and Jefferson Tascón (Jaco), with Braun and Tascón moving forward to the finals.

As usual, in the Gran Finals, the spectacle did not disappoint. It was obvious that Muñoz was hungry to win, and within the first few minutes pulled a right with an aerial 360, that he landed perfectly, and scored a 6.7. Tascón, who was surfing in the finals and throughout the event with great speed and explosiveness in the critical parts of the waves, continually put pressure on Muñoz.

As usual, Naranjo, no stranger to the final heat of Hermosa, surfed surely and offered a great backside and once even going to 1st position with a great combination, one that was scored 6.23.

But, it looked like it was going to be between Muñoz and Tascón in the waves that were peeling about 5 feet the whole weekend. Tascón took the lead, but for lack of experience in the end he ended up with an interference against Braun, which reduced his points.

In the last 5 minutes of the heat,  Muñoz took off from a series of waves and made an explosive 360 turn in the critical part, sliding down the open face, continuing right to connect for another vertical maneuver for an 8.67 score. This combination gave him 15.34 forcing his opponents to think about new combinations in the last 2 minutes, but alas it was not to be.

Muñoz left the water and was raised on the shoulders of his friends and family, taken to the prize platform where reggae singer Gentlemen serenaded him acapella in front of the crowd of over 1,000 people who were proud of their native son.

“I’m very happy, very proud for the people of Esterillos, and for my family,” said Muñoz, the youngest champion ever in the 9-year history of the Circuito Nacional de Surf, and the International Surfing Association (ISA) #9 ranked in the world at the recent World Junior Surfing Games in Ecuador. “It wasn’t in my mind to win the Championship, until I got into the Finals of this competition. I just want to be an example for the rest of the kids who follow me.”

Along with the Open title, Muñoz, this weekend, won the national Junior and Boys title, making a Costa Rican record. His total championships are the following: 2009: Open, Junior, Boys; 2008:  Junior, Boys; 2007: Boys, Grommets; 2006: Grommets; 2005: MiniGrommets.

“It was an excellent event and I’m super happy for Carlos. The first time he ever competed was at a Circuito event and now he’s a National Champion Champion. I’m so proud,” said José Ureña, President of the Federacion de Surf de Costa Rica.

The other big news at the Gran Finals Terreza – Reef came in the Women’s division. While everyone expected a big showdown in the finals between 16-year-old surfing wunderkind Nataly Bernold and veteran champ Lisbeth Vindas, it was not be. Coming into this date, the two surfers were tied in rankings points. Bernold, a 1-time, national Women’s surf champion, was ranked #6 in the world at the 2008 World Surfing Games Portugal, and Vindas was a name equated with Costa Rican surfing, had won the national Women’s championship 6 times already.

Like Torres, Bernold failed to find waves in her semifinal heat, and didn’t pass, never meeting Vindas head-on in the competition this weekend at all. The elimination of Bernold sealed the national title for Vindas even before she made it to the final heat, which she won as well.

“I was praying to win my title back, and I did,” Vindas said afterwards.

Cedric Auffret of Tamarindo also earned back his national championship Longboard crown, a plan he had in mind before the first date of the Circuito Nacional de Surf this year. A former shortboarder, who turned to Longboarding after winning a Robert August 9’6 What I Ride surfboard at a Robert August Surf & Turf contest in Tamarindo, Auffret said he is very excited to have his title back and loves being a part of the Circuito, especially this year.

The entire Gran Finals Terraza – Reef, according to Ureña, felt like the staging area of the ISA Billabong World Surfing Games Costa Rica 2009, which is set for the exact same location at the beach at Hotel Terraza del Pacifico July 31. For example, there was a brand new fiberboard podium which housed a computerized scoring system. The ISA Director Stephanie Keith was around all weekend taking meetings with the Federacion. A Billabong executive was making a film. Not to mention that the athletes were under extreme pressure to perform, and of course, the surprises in the water.

One aspect of the Gran Finals Terraza – Reef adopted from the World Surf Games format is the Tag Team surf contest. The end of the Curcuito Nacional de Surf was celebrated in this way with the participation of four teams competing for a prize of $500 to the winner. Taking place in the evening at the beach in front of Hotel Terraza del Pacifico which has lights for night surfing, the team dressed in red lycra (Gilbert Brown, Jordan Hernandez/Jaco, Josymar Fuentes (Jaco), Muñoz, and Mariana Samudio/Jaco) managed to overcome their opponents and become champions.

Damaris Arriola and Karla Gutierrez, president of Municipal Advice and Mayoress of the Municipality of Jaco, gave out the trophies to the champions afterwards.

“Today was an important day to finish the work of analysis in selecting the next National Costa Rica Surf Team for the World Surfing Games in Costa Rica. We are very content to see the level of surfing at all ages, and on one hand we can see all the experienced surfers and on the other all the young talent,” commented Ureña.

Finally, yesterday, in the morning DAYSTAR Properties, a sponsor of healthy activities including a beach festival that brought the best kayakers of the country here, initiated another Tag Team competition with a $1,000 price. The winners of this game were Diego Naranjo, Lisbeth Vindas, Luis Vindas (Jaco), Ariel Gutierrez (Jaco) and Juan Carlos Naranjo (Jaco).

Predicciones cero: ¡Carlos Muñoz es el nuevo campeón de Costa Rica!

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 4 May, 2009 : - - En la sexta y última fecha denominada Terraza – Reef las emociones se intensificaron en el segundo día al empezar a llegar resultados inesperados, en especial el abandono a la competencia desde semifinales de Jason Torres en Open, espacio que aprovechó Carlos Muñoz para consagrarse como el nuevo campeón nacional de Costa Rica. 

La situación en Open decía que Jason Torres debía lograr la quinta posición de la fecha para asegurar el título nacional, pero en semifinales resbaló con la cuarta posición del heat, lo que le dio un sétimo lugar de la fecha. Con esto abrió una ventana a Jair Pérez y Carlos Muñoz de luchar el campeonato sólo si ganaban la Terraza – Reef de 6 estrellas. 

Y lo logró Muñoz: tras avanzar como  líder desde un heat “de lujo” en la semifinal que jugaron Gilbert Brown, Diego Naranjo, Jair Pérez y Carlos Muñoz, al lado de Naranjo, Muñoz se puso en la final del evento y a la espera de la acción de la semifinal 2 que la corrieron Juan Carlos Naranjo, Jason Torres, Matías Braun y Jefferson Tascón, dos últimos que clasificaron y completaron la final.           
     
Y se vino el espectáculo. Sonó la corneta de esa gran final, Carlos Muñoz no se hizo esperar y le regaló a los jueces en los primeros segundos del heat un radical aéreo de caída reverse perfectamente bien aterrizado. El criterio lo premió con  más de 6.00 puntos.

En esa final Open y durante todo el evento, se reveló un Jefferson Tascón con un surfing de “subir y bajar”,  es decir, de gran manejo de la velocidad, fuerza y explosión en las partes críticas de la ola, quien fue el que más presión le metió a Muñoz al bajarlo momentáneamente al segundo lugar con una ola derecha para el recuerdo.

Por su parte, el campeón nacional y ganador de esta fecha, Diego Naranjo no se ponía a tras y con un surfing seguro y manejo de un gran “backside” metía también presión a Tascón y Muñoz yendo incluso a la primera posición con su primera combinación (dos mejores olas).

Pero Muñoz y Tascón aseguraban el heat con sus primeras olas de gran puntuación. Y se dejó venir el segundo ataque de Jefferson con otra de sus características lúcidas el día de ayer; la selección de olas le puso formas perfectas donde logró desplegar su máximo nivel de surfing, en olas que llegaron hasta los 5 pies en Terrazas durante el sábado.

Tascón tomó el liderato, pero a falta de experiencia en una final, esto le jugó en contra cuando metió una interferencia a Matías Braun y por ende, se le restaba la mitad del puntaje de su segunda mejor ola.

A falta de 5 minutos, de 20 que concedieron para esa final, se vino el último set del heat y Muñoz apoderado del inside desde minutos atrás, tomó la cola de la serie de olas y metió un explosivo giro de 360 grados en la parte crítica, donde la ola se le abrió para seguir conectando de frente a ella con maniobras verticales. Hasta la orilla la llevó, y terminó denotando un evidente desgaste de fuerza en sus piernas.

Se vino la puntuación del jurado, y pagaron aquella con más de 8 puntos, lo que le sumó un combinación de 15,34 y obligando a sus contrarios a crear combinaciones nuevas, más no una segunda mejor ola.

Restaban 2 minutos para que acabara el heat y los familiares y amigos de Muñoz con el agua hasta las rodillas, lo esperaban para, por primera vez, alzar un surfista en hombros hasta la tarima donde lo esperaba el artista Gentleman para abrazarlo y dedicarle uno de sus éxitos con un canto a capela que las más de 1.000 personas en la playa agradecieron tras el espectáculo de surf y música.

“Lo único que quiero dar en momentos como estos es agradecimiento a las personas que me apoyan para esto sea posible. A mi familia, a Arturo Quiroz, a mis amigos, a mis patrocinadores y al circuito. Y muchas gracias a todos por estar aquí”, dijo Muñoz en su discurso de campeón.           
Carlos Muñoz, logró imponer de esta manera más records en el circuito nacional. Ayer logró con 16 años de edad los título sub 16, sub 18 y Open, nuevo record de edad para una campeón nacional.   

Los campeonatos de Muñoz son los siguientes:
2005: sub 12.
2006: sub 14.
2007: sub 16 y sub 14. 
2008: sub 18 y sub 16.
2009: Open, sub 18 y sub 16.
Además ayer, estuvo a un paso de repetir lo que hizo en la 5ta fecha de Playa Carmen. Solo que  esta vez en Junior quedó de sub ganador de la fecha después de Anthony Segura. En Boys (sub 16 sí venció y en la Open arrazó.           

Lisbeth renueva
Acostumbrada Costa Rica a relacionar el nombre Lisbeth Vindas con campeona nacional, ayer ésta relación tendrá al menos para un año más porque la jacoeña logró ganar la última fecha y por ende consagrar su sétimo título de la temporada.

“Cada año que pasa veo mi futuro incierto porque nuevos talentos van apareciendo, pero mis  ganas de competir, eso sí crece cada vez más. Anoche (antenoche) casi no pude dormir pensando si era posible quedar campeona nacional y creo más bien que estoy despertando”, refirió Lisbeth Vindas.
Lisbeth desde el inicio del Circuito Nacional de Surf en el año 2001, ha ganado todo menos 2007, pausa en la seguidilla de títulos de Vindas impuesta por Nataly Bernold, quien llegó a este Terraza – Reef con las misma posibilidades que Lisbeth; sin embargo, no avanzó a la final que Lisbeth ganó.

La fiesta de una final del Circuito Nacional de Surf se vive en grande con la conclusión de la participación de cuatro equipos corriendo estratégicamente por el premio en efectivo de 500 dólares al ganador.

Un par de horas después de culminar la competencia, el equipo vestido de rojo (Gilbert Brown, Jordan Hernández, Josymar Fuentes, Carlos Muñoz y Mariana Samudio) lograron vencer a sus contrarios y fueron los últimos competidores en la premiación final de los campeones.

Con las palabras de Damaris Arriola y Karla Gutierrez, presidenta del consejo municipal y Alcaldesa de la Municipalidad  de Jacó, correspondientemente, los trofeos a los campeones se entregaron minutos previos al inicio del concierto cierre de la fecha más importante del surf nacional.

“Hoy era el día vital para terminar el trabajo de análisis de la próxima selección nación para el mundial de Costa Rica. Estamos muy contentos de ver que el nivel de nuestros surfistas está en todas la edades, por lo que contamos por un lado con surfistas experimentados, y por el otro el talento joven”, comentó José Ureña, presidente de la Federación.

Y por último, en horas de la mañana de hoy, DAY STAR Properties, se hizo sentir una vez con su apoyo a la actividad sana, con la realización del  festival de playa que trajo a los mejores kayakistas del país, además de la cita para los surfistas que integraron el Tag Team, para un nuevo juego, pero esta vez con 1.000 dólares (567.000 colones) en efectivo.

El premio fue para el equipo que lo integraron Diego Naranjo, Lisbeth Vindas, Luis Vindas, Ariel Gutierrez y Juan Carlos Naranjo.
