Adam Melling wins 2009 O'Neill Cold Water Classic Scotland        > en francais ci dessous

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 5 May, 2009 : - - Thurso, Scotland -- In fading evening light, but clean glassy solid six to eight foot Thurso East, Adam Melling raised the highland sword above his head as the winner of the O’Neill Cold Water Classic Scotland by Swatch 2009.

“It feels pretty amazing. I just didn’t want to come second again that’s for sure,” said Adam, who was runner up here last year to Adam Robertson. “That sword is the best trophy ever,” he said. “Last year I was so envious of Robbo getting that. It’s going up on the wall for sure. “

Adam Melling showed his intention from the start - with a wave scoring 6.67 in the first 25 seconds of the heat - and then did not stop from there against fellow Australian Luke Munro. “I’ve been wanting to win a contest for so long and I’ve been pushing myself so hard and today I’ve finally done it,” said Adam.

After standout surfing throughout the event, Luke Munro was disappointed not to walk away with the sword. “That sword did slip away,” said Luke, “but you can’t take anything away from Adam he surfed great all event. “ For winning this 6 Star Prime ASP WQS event, Adam Melling walks away with not only one of the most coveted trophies in professional surfing, but also 3500 WQS tour points as well as $20,000.

As is tradition in this competition, event ambassador and local surfing legend Andy Bain ‘knighted’ Adam as he kneeled before him, before handing the highland sword over as a prize. “I don’t remember how we came up with the ceremony,” said Andy, “But it’s great that there is someone who kneels before me.”

As an added prize in keeping with the Scottish surrounds of this competition, both finalists will receive their own land in the Scottish Highlands – albeit 10sq foot – officially making both Luke and Adam, ‘Lords’ of their land. Thus now presenting Lord Munro and Lord Melling.

“I got a Lord Munro for second,” said Luke. “I feel awesome being Lord Munro especially as a lot of my heritage is from Scotland.” As for Adam; “It’s great,” he said. “I don’t know what I’m going to do with it yet. Maybe put a chicken on it or something.”

It is the third time in a row that an Australian has won this competition - following on from Nathan Hedge and Adam Robertson. Continuing tradition, it was also the third year in a row that the competition saw an all-Australian final.  The Gold Coast’s Luke Munro had earlier defeated French surfer Joan Duru in the first semi final of the evening on his last wave in the dying seconds of the heat.

And in the second final, Adam Melling from Lennox Head had another close heat against yet another Australian Blake Thornton. It was a long day starting with a 5am call, an 8am start, and a 35 minute final heat kicking off at 8pm, but no one was complaining. As the day progressed and the Cold Water Classic Scotland reached the final rounds - the wind magically died off, and in contrast to the surf reports the swell built.

The Australian-strong crowd of surfers supporting their friends from the reef were having trouble containing their excitement not only at the surfing on display but also at the quality of the sets coming in to this world-class left hand reef break. “It’s been great to have the finals day in the best waves of the event,” said contest director Matt Wilson “We have achieved the grand final at Thurso East which is exactly what we wanted.”

The O’Neill Cold Water Classic Series Scotland by Swatch lived up to its reputation here in Thurso for 2009. It was definitely wild – with howling winds and hailstones integrated into the competition. There was no doubt that it was cold as the surfers covered themselves head to toe in the latest wetsuit gear and the spectators braved the winds in ugg boots, and outfits more often seen in the mountains than the sea, to watch all the action.

And of course it was the most Northern surf contest on the planet.  As one of five competitions in the O’Neill Cold Water Classic Series, Adam’s win puts him at the top of the O’Neill Cold Water Classic Series ranking – the winner walking away with a prize of $50,000. 

With two events now completed in the Series – Tasmania and Scotland – it’s now on to Cape Town from June 20 – 24 before heading to Vancouver Island in Canada and Santa Cruz, California.

L'AUSTRALIEN ADAM MELLING REMPORTE LE ONEILL COLD
WATER CLASSIC ECOSSE PAR SWATCH DANS UN THURSO

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 5 May, 2009 : - - Thurso, Scotland -- Le O'Neill Cold Water Classic Ecosse nous aura offert une finale en apothéose à Thurso East, avec des vagues dépassant les deux mètres qui ont permis à l'australien Adam Melling, second l'année dernière, de s'imposer face à son compatriote Luke Munro.

« C'est une sensation assez incroyable, je ne voulais pas finir une deuxième fois second » a déclaré Adam après avoir brandi la fameuse épée des Highlands. « Cette épée est la plus belle des récompenses » a-t-il poursuivit « l'année dernière j'avais été vraiment déçu de ne pas pouvoir repartir avec mais, cette année elle ira au mur !».

Cette finale 100 % australienne, a clôturé une journée de compétition qui a démarré à 8 heures du matin et, c'est probablement le talent de Melling aussi bien que sa résistance à la fatigue après cinq séries surfées, qui lui ont donné l'avantage face à un Luke Munro épuisé, qui a en plus cassé sa planche dans les dernières minutes de cette confrontation épique.

Adam Melling a rapidement pris les devants grâce à une vague notée 6.67 dans la première minute de la finale. « Je voulais gagner cette compétition depuis longtemps et je me suis vraiment motivé pour atteindre cet objectif et aujourd'hui j'ai réalisé mon rêve, » a déclaré Adam.

Luke Munro qui a très bien surfé tout au long de l'épreuve, n'a donc jamais réussi à rattraper son retard et s' est donc incliné logiquement. « Adam a très bien commencé la série et plus j'ai essayé de revenir au score, plus cela me semblait difficile. Adam a parfaitement négocié cette finale et l'épée lui revient de droit, » a déclaré Munro.

Adam Melling repart donc avec l'un des trophées les plus convoités du circuit professionnel et il empoche également 20 000 dollars et 3500 points au classement WQS. Les deux finalistes ont aussi reçu un titre de propriété au cours d'une cérémonie dans la plus pure tradition des Highlands, 10 mètres 2, qui font des deux australiens des Lords écossais.

« Je suis fait Lord pour avoir fini second » a déclaré Luke. « C'est quelque chose qui a une vrai signification pour moi car j'ai des ancêtres écossais. » Et Adam a lui déclaré: « C'est super. Je ne sais pas ce que je vais en faire. Peut-être que j'y mettrai quelques poules... »

Cette domination australienne sur les terres écossaises, ne doit pas faire oublier l'excellent résultat du français Joan Duru, qui atteint les demi finales de cette épreuve ASP WQS 6 étoiles en engrangeant 2675 points au classement. Joan s'est incliné face à Luke Munro, l'australien réussissant à prendre une bonne vague dans les dernières secondes de la série pour passer devant le français. Un résultat de bonne augure, qui place le surfeur landais dans une très bonne position pour le reste de la saison avec comme objectif déclaré, une place dans l'ASP World Tour 2010.

Dans la seconde demi finale, tout aussi serrée, Adam Melling, originaire de Lennox Head, s'est défait de justesse de son compatriote Blake Thornton. Comme pour célébrer cette fin de compétition, le vent est tombé pour les phases finales de ce Cold Water Classic Ecosse et la houle, contrairement aux prévisions, a pris en taille pour offrir des vagues de plus de deux mètres en finale.

Tous les surfeurs australiens de la compétition se sont rassemblés sur le reef de Thurso pour soutenir les deux finalistes et explosaient de joie à chaque belle série de vagues déferlant sur ce spot de classe mondiale.

“C'est génial d'avoir pu terminer cette compétition dans les meilleures conditions de vagues que nous ayons eu,” a déclaré le directeur de compétition Matt Wilson “Nous avons eu la grande finale à Thruso East et c'est exactement ce que nous voulions.”

Le O’Neill Cold Water Classic Series Ecosse par Swatch a été encore une fois à la hauteur de sa réputation sur cette édition 2009.  La partie n'a pas toujours été aisée, avec des vents forts et de la grêle qui sont venus jouer les troubles faits.

Le froid a aussi été intense, les surfeurs étant équipés des toutes dernières combinaisons isothermes et les spectateurs ayant revêtus des vêtements généralement réservés à la montagne.

Car bien sûr, c'était la compétition la plus au nord de la planète et l'une des cinq étapes des O’Neill Cold Water Classic Series. La victoire d'Adam va lui permettre de se rapprocher du pactole de 50 000 dollars promis au vainqueur des O’Neill Cold Water Classic Series. Après les deux premières étapes, en Tasmanie et en Ecosse, Adam est le leader actuel des Cold Water Classic Series et il aura à coeur de consolider son avance lors des prochains rendez-vous.

Cape Town en Afrique du Sud accueillera la prochaine étape des O’Neill Cold Water Classic Series, du 20 au 24 juin avant de partir pour l'île canadienne de Vancouver et Santa Cruz en Californie.
