Big movement in the WQS ratings after double six-star events

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 5 May, 2009 : - -  Coolangatta -- Two major ASP WQS events completed this week in USA and Portugal with another well underway in Scotland. The ASP WQS 6-Star Prime 6.0 Lowers Pro at Trestles in California and ASP Grade-2 Oakley Pro Junior were completed with Hawaiians Fred Patacchia and Kai Barger the respective winners.

For Fred, this is his first major ASP WQS career win with only two other wins, both at the Xcel Pro in Sunset Beach in 2002 and 2004. Fred’s win has pushed him to 53rd on the ratings with just this one event counting so it will be interesting to see if he now decides to kick on and do the ASP WQS tour for the rest of the year.

Fred defeated USA’s Ben Bourgeois in the Final with equal 3rd Semifinalists, France’s Tim Boal and Nathan Yeomans also from the US. Kai’s win in the ASP Pro Junior event adds another Pro Junior title to a growing list including, the Billabong ASP World Junior Title he secured in January earlier this year.

In South Africa, Oakley were also sponsoring another ASP Pro Junior event where Shaun Joubert and Sarah Baum were the winners. For Shaun, it is his second ASP Pro Junior title and for Sarah her first.

Heading north to Europe, the girls were busy in excellent surf at Portugal in the Estoril Billabong Girls where Sally Fitzgibbons opened her 2009 ASP WQS tour campaign with a first up win following on from last year’s unbelievable run of results. Sally now has 3 ASP WQS titles and is rated 16th.

Coco Ho was able to secure 2nd place after defeating fellow Hawaiian Carissa Moore in the semis while it’s great to see Jessi Miley-Dyer also in the Semis after her unfortunate start in the ASP Women’s World Tour events at the Gold Coast and Bells earlier this year.

The ASP WQS Men’s ratings Top 15 are as below.

Major movers upwards are Dan Ross who has jumped to 3rd, Jay Thompson from 10th to 5th, Nathan Yeomans from 21st to 6th and Tanner Gudauskas from 35th to 10th.

Downward movers were Owen Wright from 1st to 8th and Adam Melling from 6th to 8th, but these guys are still competing in Scotland and will bounce back. With the O’Neill Coldwater Classic Scotland down to the last 24 surfers we can expect some major changes on the ratings in a few days when the event is completed.
