One-man play Loveswell by John Fortson raises Heal the Bay funds
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 7 May, 2009 : - - Fans of Loveswell rode the wave to success last Friday as the opening night of this raw and hilarious one-man play by John Fortson raised more than $1000 for Heal the Bay. Loveswell dives deep into the ebbs and flows of a relationship as seen through the eyes of a surfer.
The show opened to a sold-out crowd at the prestigious Hudson Guild Theater in Hollywood, including Oscar-nominated director Rob Pearlstein, who called the show “Funny, charming and heartfelt.” Over 50 guests enjoyed a post-show gala featuring scrumptious hors d’oeuvres catered by Terroni, one of LA’s hottest restaurants; a vast array of prosecco and wine, and a raffle to benefit Heal the Bay.
A non-profit group that fights for workable solutions to the problems threatening Southern California's coastal waters. The Hudson’s Café Bacio was transformed into a Polynesian paradise to celebrate writer/actor Fortson’s success and to raise money for Heal the Bay. The event featured actress and model Alexandra Leighton as Mistress of Ceremonies, along with pro surfer and “Ecowarrior” James Pribram.
The evening featured an exclusive raffle, complete with chic clothing from Ogie Kanogie; an original glicee by famed surf artist and Loveswell set designer Meegan Feori; magnums of Italian wine from Empson, USA; dinner at Picanha Churrascuria, and a tote bag from GoGaga.com. Pribram donated private surf lessons along with a stay at Laguna Beach’s La Casa Camino.
Written and performed by Fortson and directed by Terrie Silverman, Loveswell runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings through June 7. "Loveswell is such a wonderful little discovery to find in the middle of Hollywood,” says actress and Second City alum Tracy Thorpe. “Although billed as a surf play, Loveswell is a deeply touching and extraordinarily forthcoming love story,” says Thorpe.
“I found the show to be so powerful--so full of heart and soul --and hilarious on top of it all! Both John's writing and performance were pure perfection." Tickets are just $20 and are available at plays411.com. For complete details, visit loveswell.com.
