Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 18 May, 2009 : - - Next July, the Roxy Jam Biarritz will be celebrating its 4th birthday. In its magnificent setting at the Basque Coast, the event has become a major meeting-place in the world of women’s surfing, as well as being an authentic cultural and musical festival.

Keeping faith with its principle of mixing surfing competition with art and music, the Roxy Jam Biarritz shares its summer quarters below the Villa Belza, from 10th to 14th July of this year, with an intense schedule of surfing, concerts, exhibitions and shows, all free of charge.

The world’s elite is coming to France to compete for the ASP Ladies’ Longboard World Championship. 32 professional women surfers, 16 of which have pre-qualified due to their 2008 classifications, specialists in noseriding from the four corners of the globe, will fight for the title of 2009 World Ladies’ Champion, in the Basque Country, in a new competition format with elimination from round 1 onwards.

After the victory of the American, Schuyler McFerran, in 2006, that of her compatriot, Jennifer Smith, who reigned in 2007 and, finally, the surprise win by the Hawaiian, Joy Monahan, last year, the podium has been dominated by surfers from the United States…despite strong competition from Australia, Europe and Asia, which continues to progress and could even challenge the Yankee dominance from 2009 onwards.

The Roxy Jam Biarritz is also an art exhibition and a place of artistic exchange that is open to the public; this year’s theme will be photography. Image artists, sharing a love of the ocean, surfing and its personalities, as well as its fragility and dangers, will offer summer visitors their unique view in exhibitions entitled:

“Underwater” by Jeff Hornbaker, an American photographer and loyal collaborator with Roxy, past-master in the art of capturing the magic of the ocean and its sirens.

“Soul Surfers” by Takis Bibelas, (see illustration opposite) a surfer/photographer of Green extract, raised in Canada, who has contributed to several prestigious magazines (Vogue Hommes, Vanity Fair, Marie Claire Italie, GQ…) and who has fallen in love with the Basque Country…

“Le Cercle de l’Eau” by Lorène Carpentier, an exclusively photographic exhibition, centred on water, "a living element, perfection on Earth”, the contemplation of which is food for the spirit.

“Popurri” by the major names in surfing photography, such as Sylvain Cazenave, Eric Chauché or even the young collective Aquashot. 

“Portraits”: a gallery of real individuals, interspersed with poetry by the now famous duo of Stéphanie Solinas (photographer) and Carole Bielicki (painter).

“Polluant Pollué” by Florence Deyrou on a topic that is dear to the hearts of surfers and nature-lovers in general.

All works on display are for sale, with 50% of the profits being ploughed back into the Quiksilver Foundation.

Alongside this exhibition, the public will be able to attend a number of fun and artistic workshops. These activities will invite the public to familiarise themselves with image and become players in the exhibition.

Since its creation, the Roxy Jam Biarritz has been faultless in its musical programming. The key to the event, the music is carefully and eclectically selected so that, each summer, there is an attractive set of young groups and female artists of international renown, with live shows organised all over Biarritz and throughout the event. Headlining at this years event is alternative electro rock musician, songwriter and producer Santigold.

After Neneh Cherry and her group Cirkus, Cibelle and even The Organ in 2006, Cansei de Ser Sexy (CSS), Pravda, DJ Chloé et Jules-Edouard Moustic with his “I have a dream” radio for the musical show of the 2007 event and The Dø, Operator Please, Inrocks Steady Crew, Nadège Winter and My Brightest Diamond in 2008…the 2009 vintage is in the final stages of preparation. One thing is sure; the magic of open-air concerts on the Port Vieux beach, with sand between your toes, will once more rock this summer this summer will rock, once more.

And also…
A first… Roxy Athletix Race, an endurance race with the Roxy girls acting as coaches.  The showing of the new surfing film, “Dear & Yonder”, which magically retraces the history of ladies’ surfing and its charismatic figures: from the lamented Rell Sunn to the young and prodigious Sally Fitzgibbons, not forgetting Lisa Andersen, Linda Benson…

The Roxy Jam Biarritz 2009 will end in a blaze of glory on 14th July, at the Grande Plage, with demonstrations of tandem, pirogue boats, a concert and the traditional and majestic firework display, held every year to commemorate Bastille Day.

Installé dans le cadre majestueux de la Côte des Basques, l'événement est devenu un rendez-vous majeur du monde du surf féminin mais aussi, un authentique festival culturel et musical.

Fidèle à son principe : mixer la compétition de surf, l'art et la musique, le Roxy Jam Biarritz reprend ainsi ses quartiers d'été en contrebas de la Villa Belza du 10 au 14 juillet prochains avec une programmation intense mixant surf, concerts, expositions et animations entièrement gratuite.

Lélite mondiale est attendue en France pour disputer le Championnat du Monde de Longboard Féminin ASP. 32 surfeuses professionnelles, dont 16 qualifiées grâce à leur classement 2008, spécialistes de noseriding en provenance des quatre coins du globe, se disputeront, au Pays Basque, le titre de Championne du Monde 2009. A noter le nouveau format de compétition avec lélimination directe au 1er tour.

Après le sacre de laméricaine Schuyler McFerran en 2006, celui de sa compatriote Jennifer Smith, impériale en 2007 et enfin, la victoire surprise de lhawaïenne Joy Monahan lan passé, le palmarès de lépreuve est trusté par les Etats-Unis en dépit dune forte concurrence australienne, européenne et asiatique qui ne cesse de progresser et se verrait bien bousculer la suprématie yankee. Dès 2009 ?

Le Roxy Jam Biarritz cest aussi une exposition dart et un lieu déchange artistique ouvert au public dont le thème cette année sera la photographie.Des artistes de limage dont le dénominateur commun est lamour de locéan, du surf et de ses personnalités, mais aussi de sa fragilité et de ses dangers, offriront aux estivants leur regard singulier au travers dexpos intitulées :

« Underwater » par Jeff Hornbaker, photographe américain et collaborateur fidèle de Roxy, passé maître dans lart de capter la magie de locéan et de ses sirènes.

« Soul Surfers » par Takis Bibelas, (voir illustration ci-contre) photographe surfeur dorigine grecque et élevé au Canada, collaborateur de nombreuses revues prestigieuses (Vogue Hommes, Vanity Fair, Marie Claire Italie, GQ…) tombé amoureux du Pays Basque

« Le Cercle de lEau » par Lorène Carpentier, un travail photographique exclusivement, axé sur l'eau, " élément de vie, perfection sur terre" dont la contemplation est la nourriture spirituelle.

« Popurri » par de grandes signatures de la photo de surf comme Sylvain Cazenave, Eric Chauché ou encore le jeune collectif Aquashot.

« Portraits » : une galerie de personnages réels croqués avec poésie par le désormais célèbre duo Stéphanie Solinas (photographe) et Carole Bielicki (peintre)

« Polluant Pollué » par Florence Deyrou sur un thème cher aux surfeurs et aux amoureux de la nature en général.

Toutes les uvres présentées sont destinées à la vente. 50% des gains seront reversés à la Fondation Quiksilver.

En parallèle de cette exposition, de nombreux ateliers seront proposés au public. Ludiques et artistiques, ces activités inviteront le public à se familiariser avec l’image et devenir acteurs de l’exhibition.

Musique

Depuis sa création, le Roxy Jam Biarritz peut se targuer dun sans faute sur sa programmation musicale. Clé de voûte de l’événement, la musique fait lobjet d’une sélection pointue et éclectique pour constituer, chaque été, une scène attrayante de jeunes groupes et d’artistes féminines au rayonnement international, des représentations en live organisées partout dans Biarritz tout au long de l’événement.

le Roxy Jam met cette année en scène la prodigieuse prêtresse de la pop Santi White plus connue sous son nom de scène : «Santigold». Santigold est la révélation pop de l’année 2008 et l’une des artistes les plus furieusement tendance du moment. La new-yorkaise a mis tout le monde d’accord avec son premier album, Santogold (Lizard King/Naïve) et prépare déjà son deuxième opus.

En première partie du concert, le public de la plage du Port Vieux assistera à un concert live du trio «Le Corps mince de Françoise ». Trois Finlandaises surexcitées qui font dans la synth-pop rétro 80’s jouissive. Une grosse dose de culot et pas mal d’autodérision, voilà la recette de ces filles au style décalé.

Une chose est sûre, la magie des concerts en plein air sur la plage du Port Vieux, les pieds dans le sable, opérera cet été le 13 juillet à partir de 21h, soirée groovy assurée.

Et aussi… Une première… Roxy Athletix Race, une course d’endurance avec les Roxy girls dans le rôle des coaches.

La projection du nouveau film de surf « Dear & Yonder » qui retrace avec magie l’histoire du surf féminin et de ses figures charismatiques : de la regrettée Rell Sunn à la jeune et prodigieuse Sally Fitzgibbons en passant par Lisa Andersen, Linda Benson…

Le Roxy Jam Biarritz 2009 s’achèvera en apothéose le 14 juillet sur la Grande Plage avec des démonstrations de tandem, de pirogue, un concert et le traditionnel et majestueux feu d’artifice tiré chaque année en commémoration de la fête nationale.

Roxy Jam Biarritz: surf, musica & festival dell’arte 10 - 14 luglio 2009

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 18 May, 2009 : - - Il prossimo luglio si svolgerà il Roxy Jam Biarritz, quest’anno arrivato alla sua quarta edizione. L’evento, che ha luogo nella magnifica cornice naturale delle coste Basche  è ormai diventato il più importante punto di ritrovo nel mondo del surf femminile, oltre che un autentico festival culturale e musicale. Il Roxy Jam Biarritz avrà luogo dal 10 al 14 luglio sulle spiagge di Villa Belza con un fitto programma di surf, concerti, esibizioni e show, tutti gratuiti, tutti al femminile.

La gara
L’intera elite mondiale arriverà in Francia per prendere parte al campionato mondiale ASP Ladies’ Longboard. Trentadue surfiste professioniste, riders d’eccellenza, arriveranno dai quattro angoli del globo nei Paesi Baschi per il titolo 2009 di World Ladies’ Champion, con un nuovo format competitivo con eliminazioni dal primo round in poi.

Nelle precedenti edizioni il podio è stato completamente conquistato dalle surfiste americane… nonostante la forte competizione australiana, europea e asiatica, che potrebbe anche sbaragliare la dominazione Yankee per questo 2009: Schuyler McFerran, nel 2006, Jennifer Smith, nel 2007, e infine la sorprendente vittoria dell’hawaiiana Joy Monahan, lo scorso anno.

Arte

Il Roxy Jam Biarritz come ogni anno diverrà luogo di scambi artistici, con una grande esposizione aperta a tutti, che in quest’edizione avrà come tema la fotografia. Gli artisti coinvolti, attraverso le loro immagini, condivideranno con il pubblico l’amore per l’Oceano, il surf con i suoi protagonisti, in sezioni intitolate:

 “Popurri” tutti i più famosi nomi dei fotografi del mondo del surf, come Sylvain Cazenave, Eric Chauché o anche la giovane collettiva Aquashot.

Inoltre al Roxy Jam Biarritz si  potrà assistere a numerosi workshop artistici, per partecipare attivamente alle diverse iniziative in programma.

Tutti i lavori esposti saranno in vendita, e il 50% del ricavato sarà devoluto alla Quiksilver Foundation.

Musica

Sin dalla sua creazione, il Roxy Jam Biarritz è sempre stato attento alla programmazione musicale durante l’evento. La musica è infatti selezionata attentamente, anche in modo eterogeneo, per creare ogni estate un evento con giovani gruppi e interpreti femminili di fama internazionale, con performance live organizzate  nelle principali piazze di Biarritz e per tutta la durata dell’evento.

Fervono i preparativi per il 2009.  Anche per questa edizione sarà assicurata la magica cornice del palco open-air sulla spiaggia di Porto Vecchio. E infine per la prima volta la Roxy Athletix Race, una gara capitanata dalle ragazze del team Roxy e la proiezione in anteprima del nuovo film sul surf  “Dear & Yonder”, che ripercorre la storia delle donne nel surf e le sue carismatiche figure: da Rell Sunn a Sally Fitzgibbons.

Il Roxy Jam Biarritz 2009 si concluderà martedì 14 luglio, alla Gran Plage, con dimostrazioni di tandem sulla tavola, piroghe, concerti e il tradizionale spettacolo pirotecnico, che ogni anno commemora il Giorno della Bastiglia.
