Two centuries of surf up for auction: Limited spots left for 'gems'
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 19 May, 2009 : - - Honolulu -- Two centuries of surf will be up for auction in just two months time when the Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction, presented by Quiksilver, hits the Blaisdell Center in Honolulu, July 17 & 18. Auction lots are now 90% finalized, however curator Randy Rarick is holding back 10% of space for last minute "gem" consignments.
The line-up for this, the fifth biennial Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction, is without a doubt the strongest ever since it began in 2001. Following is a sample of highlighted items that will go under the hammer this time around:
An 1800's Alai'a big wave board - perhaps the most unique item of the auction. Unlike the common six-foot model, this board is nine feet in length with a pulled tail.
From the 20th century, redwood plank boards from the teens and '20s that boast great graphics and are in superb all-original condition.
The paddleboard category: a set of Tom Blake paddleboards with models from Mitchell, Rogers, and a very unique small Catalina surfboard model.
An exquisite solid wood board from the '20s that was the greeting sign piece from the Royal Hawaiian Hotel's "Surf Room and Mai Tai Bar".
The James Arness Collection, featuring a Pete Peterson paddleboard from the '40s; a "Star of the Show" 1950 Foam Sandwich board with its original receipt, canceled check and documentation from Bob Simmons; a 1963 13' Dick Brewer Surfboards Hawaii Makaha Point gun; a never-ridden, like new, 1970 12' Bing "Maui Foil"; and a huge (5' x 9') studio artist rendition of the famous shot of Fred Hemmings at the Makaha Bowl that was taken by legendary photographer Dr. Don James.
Balsa boards from master shapers Matt Kivlin and Joe Quigg, along with a Quigg-shaped personal paddleboard of Tom Zahn including his personal scrap book of paddling photos, lifeguard patches and medals.
Big Wave "Guns" of the '60s from the likes of Mike Diffenderfer, Greg Noll, and Dick Brewer.
From the '70s, Brewer's proteges Sam Hawk and "Owl" Chapman will have boards represented. There are also boards by Lightning Bolt shapers Bill Barnfield, Bill Stonebraker, Tom Parrish, Barry Kanaiaupuni, Rory Russell and Pipeline Master Gerry Lopez.
The pro era is well represented with personal boards of Tom Carroll, Mark Richards, Shaun Tomson and the first professional World Champion, Peter Townend.
Townend will not only have his personal Tom Parrish Bolt up for auction, but also a swag of memorabilia including his "Big Wednesday" movie items that will also include Jan Michael Vincent's full balsa "Big Wednesday" gun!
Original prop boards from "Ride the Wild Surf" and the "Gidget" series, signed by both the original Gidget and Gidget actress, Sally Field.
Non-surfboard items: great art work pieces; electic surf movie memorabilia; Duke Kahanamoku items including the family album with over 70 pages of history, geneology, photos, newsclippings from all the brothers; surf books; 1800's missonary printed material; trophies; and a host of other surf related items.
