June 05, Surfing Heritage Foundation: A Wave Beckons
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 19 May, 2009 : - - San Clemente -- It is the wave in your dreams, that distant perfect right-- or left-- whose power you hear a world away. Wolfgang Bloch was born a world away from L.A., in Ecuador, and learned to surf as a kid off beaches west of Guayaquil. With the ocean as his muse he immigrated to Florida, then on to Pasadena where he graduated from the rigorous Art Center, College of Design.
Despite a successful design career with firms like Quiksilver and Billabong, it is that powerful perfect wave that brings Bloch satisfaction in fine art today. His work, at once both abstract and immediately real, draw the viewer in with the subtle colors of nature. His paintings, on a mix of both canvas and found objects, will be on display for a month beginning June 05.
That night Wolfgang Bloch will join Kevin Ancell, Rick Rietveld, Kevin Short, Alex Weistein and others in recognition of the 50th anniversary of Surf Art.
Discussing the people, art, and waves that have influenced and inspired them, the artists will share some of the techniques that make their work unique. Showing opens at 6:30PM, Friday, June 05; symposium begins at 7:15. Hors d’oeuvres and no-host bar available; advance tickets, $30. Proceeds will benefit the non-profit Surfing Heritage Foundation, 949 388 0313 ex. 0, online at surfingheritage.org
