Bike to Work Day at Podium Distribution

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 21 May, 2009 : - - In conjunction with LA County’s 15th annual Bike To Work Day, Podium Distribution, makers of DVS Shoes, Matix Clothing and Lakai Footwear continued its Pedal To Podium program by holding a company-wide bike ride on Thursday, May 14. On the heels of its original program, Podium VP Brian Dunlap wanted to continue to promote the Pedal To Podium ethic as a greener, healthier alternative to driving.

“Biking is a great way to help protect the environment,” says Dunlap. "We all need to do our part. Even if employees only ride to work one day a month it still helps.”

Employees who rode to work received a free case of Vitamin Water and were given a custom pair of DVS Pedal To Podium shoes. In total 15 employees rode in clocking a combined total of 310 miles—burning approximately 10,000 calories and saving roughly 310 pounds of heat-trapping CO2 from being emitted into the earth’s atmosphere.

On the same day, 31 employees went on a five-mile bike ride to lunch. Each employee consumed a 400-calorie burger at lunch, but burned off roughly the same amount of calories riding to and from. “We have employees biking to work from all over LA," explains Dunlap. "Some people, however, live too far to ride in. For those who couldn’t ride to work could at least leave their cars parked at lunch. We had over a third of the employees join in on the lunch ride.”

All riders were entered into a raffle at the end of the day with prizes provided by Vitamin Water, Volume Bikes, Swobo, Cannondale, and Helen's/I.Martin Imports.

Volume Bikes donated a sweet 26” Sledgehammer which was won by the luck of the draw by John Hackbarth from the sales department. Before his big win he was commuting 20 miles roundtrip on a thrashed, old beach cruiser.
