Gold Coast shark nets dislodged by heavy surf
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 22 May, 2009 : - - Pounding surf caused by this week's wild weather has dislodged some shark nets on south-east Queensland's Gold Coast. The Shark Safety Program director Tony Ham says nets have come loose at three beaches. Mr Ham says the Gold Coast shark contractor and boating and fisheries staff are assessing the situation.
"They're currently talking to the lifeguards and lifesavers who are giving us reports as gear comes ashore, and the contractor will go down and attempt to retrieve the gear from the surf zone if possible," he said. "If they can't actually get into the water and get the gear out then we'll put some hazard in water signs on the beach."
Mr Ham says he believes three nets have come loose, and one of those has been retrieved. "Another one is still in the surf zone but seems to be moving up and down the beach with the sweep, and we think we have another one at Tallebudgera that may be missing," he said.
