Young Surfers Shine at 1st Annual Billabong Grom Comp in Miramar Beach
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 25 May, 2009 : - - Billabong Destin and Ride On Surf School announce that nearly 50 young surfers competed in the 1st annual Billabong Grom Comp on Saturday, May 16th at the Pompano Joe’s Beach Park in Miramar Beach with over 150 spectators cheering them on.
The inaugural Billabong Grom Comp was a surfing competition for young surfers ages 12 and under and featured four divisions—Super Groms ages 8 and under, Mini Groms ages 10 and under, Groms ages 12 and under, and Senior Groms ages 14 and under. No surfing experience was required for competitors and surfboards were provided for participants that needed them. First place winners in each division were James Neal in the Super Groms division, Grayton Scheinkman in the Mini Groms division, Jake Fairly in the Groms division and Matt Wise in the Senior Groms division. Mini Grom Grayton Scheinkman also won the Tom Curry Sportsmanship Award and took home the big prize of a brand new 6.3’ Webber surfboard.

“The first annual Grom Comp was an amazing success!” said Frank Sims, owner of Billabong Destin located in Grand Boulevard and Aloha Surf Company in Baytowne Wharf. “The weather and waves were perfect for the event, and the children had a blast engaging in a little friendly competition. It was nice to see such a great turnout of kids from all across the area, and we are excited and hopeful to continue hosting surfing events in our area.” The Occy Grom Comps that are held annually in Southern California originally inspired the competition, and living up to its intent, the Billabong Grom Comp was all about children having fun and learning how to surf. It was a magical day that culminated with the awarding of trophies, ‘champagne’ sparkling grape juice showers and the presentation of the Tom Curry Sportsmanship award to Grayton Scheinkman. “We were absolutely thrilled with the turnout and camaraderie at this first contest—from the kids who competed to the parents and spectators that cheered them on,” said Matt Cassidy, founder of Ride On Surf School. “We really couldn’t have imagined a more perfect contest. The weather was amazing, everyone was stoked and it was just an all around awesome day.”
