Rip Curl ST3W
Presented by Monster Energy

Cox Bay, Tofino BC
23 - 24 May 2009

2009 Rip Curl ST3W rocks Cox Bay in Tofino Canada..

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 1 June, 2009 : - - This year, Mother Nature was definitely on our side, with blue sky, sunshine, and great waves all weekend at the Rip Curl ST3W, presented by Monster Energy.  For the third straight year the best surfers from Canada and the Pacific Northwest met at Cox Bay, Tofino, where beach shenanigans, live music, entertaining commentary from Dom Domic, and free ST3W was served.

All eyes and ears were focused on the local heroes: the legendary Bruwhiler Brothers, Peter Devries, Noah Cohen, Reid Jackson, CC Unger Mayor, Leah Oke, and many others. There were also some contestants from Australia here for the competition. These included Shannon Brown and the Michalak Brothers.

Day one was highlighted by fierce competition in the Men’s Pro and Women’s Pro all the way up to the semi finals. After running the first round for the Under 18 Competitors, contest director Christian Moutinho, signaled the end of an action packed first day at the ST3W. Despite a prediction for smaller waves on Sunday, the swell was clean, and the competition kicked off at 9am with some very contestable waves. Rip Curl was able to run all division heats and finals before the ceremonies at 3pm.

In an epic, and extremely entertaining final, the men pushed hard; and in the end, local star Pete Devries came out victorious. As for the women, Leah Oke maintained her exceptional form and took the honors. We had some crazy heats right from the start, and of course with the first place prize of $5K for the Men’s Pro and $1500 for the Women’s Pro, the incentive was enough to demand everyone’s ‘A game’ and that is exactly what they delivered.

Ninety four surfers signed up to compete in 6 catagories; Men’s Pro, Women’s Pro, Masters, Longboard, Super Grom and Mixed Grom. Other winners included Guto Cunha, first place in the Masters Division, David Fergurson, first place in the Longboard Division, Janek Peladeau, first place in the Super Groms, and Kalum Temple, who won his first ever competition in the Grom Division.

As an added bonus, there was a special guest appearance by iconic surfer Tom Curren. Tom is the 1985, 1986 and 1990 ASP World Champion. Curren along with Rip Curl US Team Manager Nick Greeninger, attended the event, both providing their assistance and knowledge on the judging tower. Tom Curren rocked out with Vince Vaccaro Saturday night at the sold out ST3W party.

Once again, entertainment wasn’t only in the water. We had an opening night ‘Heat Launch Party’ at Long Beach Surf Shop, Sitka demo’d boards, DJ Vinyl Ritche live, and food and drinks served on the beach by The Surfrider Foundation. Saturday night featured live performances by Tom Curren, Vince Vaccaro and DJ Mat the Alien. Globe set-up an open to all mini-ramp on the beach, and Rip Curl offered games, contests, and give away’s on the beach for swag of more than $20,000 from Rip Curl and the sponsors.

But, as always, our goal for the weekend was to bring the surf culture of Vancouver Island’s past back to life with a realistic goal – to continue to develop home grown athletes and help them reach world-class level. Once again the end result has exceeded our expectations for the third annual Rip Curl ST3W.

Rip Curl would like to thank everyone involved; especially Monster Energy Drink as the presenting sponsor, Globe, Sitka, SBC Surf Magazine, Spy Optics, Dose.ca, Arbor, Dakine, Light House Brewery, Surfrider Foundation, Zed Skim Boards, and all the local shops and spectators for once again showing up in masses.

We sincerely appreciate the opportunity to hold one of Canada’s only surf contest in Tofino.  Special thanks to the District of Tofino and the RCMP for helping make Canada’s biggest surf event a huge success.
