Saltwater Water Wine Pro

Hurley NSW Champ Circuit event #4
Old Bar, New South Wales
13 - 14 June 2009

Banting and Tyrell steal the show at the Saltwater Water Wine Pro

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 14 June, 2009 : - -(Old Bar, NSW – Sunday, 14 June 2009): With a handful of tomorrows stars busting down the door at the Saltwater Wine Pro, Matt Banting (Port Macquarie, NSW) and Joel Tyrell (Pacific Palms, NSW) stood above the pack today at Old Bar.

As the fourth event on the prestigious Hurley NSW Championship Circuit for 2009, the Saltwater Wine Pro saw some of the country’s best junior surfers competing for valuable ratings points and serious cash prizes. With a marked drop in conditions from yesterday’s perfection, the insatiable teen’s made the most of the fun, punchy peaks at Second Corner.

And no one was more impressive than Banting and Tyrell, who once again proved their extraordinary talent – taking home the Cadet and Junior Boys divisions. Having consistently racked up a bevy of excellent scores, including a combined heat score of 17.50 (out of a possible 20) in the semi-final stages, Banting went one better in the final.

Paddling into a perfect peak, the crowd on the beach hushed awaiting the barrage that was forthcoming – and he delivered, attacking the lip with speed, conviction and grace – scoring the event’s first perfect ride. “I’m really happy with my performance,” Banting said after his devastating victory. “It’s only my second ever ten point-ride in competition so I’m stoked.”

Defeating Dylon Hunt (Crescent Head, NSW), Connor O’Leary (Cronulla, NSW) and Beau Foster (Norah Head, NSW), who finished second, third and fourth respectively, Banting put on a clinic en-route to amassing a total heat score of 16.67 (out of a possible 20) in the final. “I’ve been really happy with my surfing of late, so today’s result is a big confidence boost for me going into the back half of the year,” he added.

With $500 up for grabs at Old Bar’s famed Second Corner, the final day of the Saltwater Wine Pro also saw the running of the Junior Boys division – with Tyrell taking the crown. “I’m over the moon,” Tyrell said, beaming after his awesome display. “It’s my best ever result at a competition.”

Using his silky forehand attack to defeat O’Leary, Oscar Scanes (Old Bar, NSW) and Jordi Watson (Currarong, NSW), who finished second, third and fourth respectively, Tyrell was over the moon. “It was such a hard event with such quality competition,” Tyrell remarked. “The level of competition was incredible.”

Having placed third in the Cadet Boys division, O’Leary proved to be the most consistent surfer of the event with his second placing in the Junior Division. Also taking place was the Hurley Boardriders Challenge, an invitational event that recognises the importance of grassroots surfing throughout the mid north coast.

Going head-to-head in a Teams Format, Saltwater Boardriders took the crown, local pride and bragging rights, whilst also winning $600 in cash. For the all Hurley NSWCC news and information please visit surfingnsw.com.au
