Al Hunt on Owen Wright's ratings lead post epic Maldives

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 15 June, 2009 : - - Coolangatta -- After a slow month in May for events, June has kicked off with the ASP WQS 6-Star PRIME SriLankan Airlines Pro in the Maldives, where Owen Wright and Pat Guduaskas went head to head in the high-scoring final. Even with a perfect 10-point ride Gudauskas, could not overcome Owen’s two high 9-plus pointers, which have skyrocketed him to a substantial lead on the ASP WQS ratings.

This is Owen’s 5th win for the year, but only his first ASP WQS as the others were ASP Pro Junior events. On the ratings, Owen jumped only from 3rd to 1st, but the important thing is the amount of points he is now leading by and being on 11,338 points and carrying two zero scores in his best seven events, he surely will qualify for the 2010 ASP Dream Tour.

Pat’s runner-up finish has pushed him from 27th to 7th on the ratings while previous ASP WQS 6-Star PRIME event winners Dan Ross, Adam Melling and Jadson Andre all have over 10,000 points and still occupy the rest of the top 4 spots. All are carrying two zero scores so should be safe come year’s end if they get a few Quarterfinal or better spots in the major ASP WQS events remaining this year.

Big movers after this event upwards were Travis Logie from 13th to 8th, Blake Thornton from 12th to 9th, Drew Courtney from 21st to 14th and Austin Ware from 35th to 15th. For all the movers upwards there has to be some going the opposite way and they were Marco Polo from 7th to 10th, Jay Thompson 8th to 12th and Nate Yeomans 9th to equal 12th.

Next week, we have the O’Neill Coldwater Classic 4 Star in Cape Town followed by the ASP WQS 6-Star Mr. Price Pro in Ballito both in South Africa so for sure we should see some ratings changes outside the Top 5.

Current Top 15 ASP WQS are:
Wright,Owen AUS 1 11338
Ross,Daniel AUS 2 10600
Melling,Adam AUS 3 10301
Andre,Jadson BRA 4 10100
Simpson,Brett USA 5 8476
Duru,Joan FRA 6 8451
Gudauskas,Patrick USA 7 8263
Logie,Travis ZAF 8 8226
Thornton,Blake AUS 9 8013
Polo,Marco BRA 10 7825
Munro,Luke AUS 11 7813
Thompson,Jay AUS 12 7688
Yeomans,Nathan USA 12 7688
Courtney,Drew AUS 14 7513
Ware,Austin USA 15 7457

That’s it for this week. Until next time, Al Hunt ASP WQS Tour Manager
