Bear Surfboards Balsa from "Big Wednesday",  1978.
Pre-auction estimate: $15,000 - $20,000.

No question about it, this is one of the most incredible finds of the auction. The very board that Jan Michael Vincent used in the movie "Big Wednesday".  This is not a prop board, but the actual one ridden and used for filming!  Made of solid balsa, with the iconic bear logo on the nose, and wood fin with fiberglass bead.  Some minor presure dents and a few shatters, but they attest to the use of the board. In extremely superb all-original condition.  One of a kind, with amazing history!   Also includes a framed, full size one sheet "Big Wednesday" movie poster, and matching framed still featuring a frame grab of "The Bear" along with Jan -Michael Vincent with the board, from the Laguna Art Museum "Surf Culture" display.

Matt Kivlin Deck

Above: Matt Kivlin Balsa 10'4" - 1955.
Pre-auction estimate: $15,000-$25,000.

We are extremely privileged to have an all original Matt Kivlin balsa on offer.  This particular board was owned by Joel MacDonald, a Beverly Hills stockbroker.  Being more of a "social surfer" who hung with the Hollywood crowd, the board spent more time in the back of his Cadillac convertible then in the water. A chance wipeout took out the original fin.  Matt Kivlin himself was kind enough to supply the proper replacement fin, which was so far ahead of it's time with cut-away design and full foil.  It's a shame the other manufacturers of the era didn't pick up on it.  A framed rendering of Matt's fin design is included with the board.  The board itself is all original with an inlaid St. Christopher on the deck, some snackles and shatters, but otherwise in superb condition. So few of these boards exist that they are considered priceless by serious surf collectors.  Here is one from the master himself!

Quigg deck

Pre-auction estimate: $$7,500-$15,000.

This is an unbelievable paddleboard with incredible provenance!  Tom Zahn's personal board, designed and built by Joe Quigg.  The Zahn/Quigg collaboration resulted in the best paddleboard records ever set!  This particular model was used by Zahn predominately for training in California, where he logged more time on this board than any other. It was brought to Hawaii for a race in the Ala Wai Canal, in which the rules stipulated it had to be wider than the 19" it was originally built with.  Quigg added extra width and Zahn went on to win the race.  They then took the extra width back off, as it went faster as a narrower board.  An award winning board featuring the second generation Quigg logo, pigmented in all white, this is one of the first foam paddleboards built by Quigg.  Truly a gem of a find!

This is just a taste of over 100 items in the main auction and an additional 100 items in the silent auction. The entire auction catalog will be available online July 1st.
