35 countries to participate at ISA World Surfing Games in Costa Rica           > en Espanol abajo 

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 19 June, 2009 : - - Playa Hermosa, Costa Rica -- With 46 days until the start of the Billabong International Surfing Association (ISA) World Surfing Games, Costa Rica 2009, 35 nationally selected surf teams from countries around the globe have confirmed participation in one of the greatest events of the sport which will take place from July 31 until August 8 in Playa Hermosa near Jaco.

The ISA confirmed that many teams would be arriving for the Games with a full contingent. These include the surf powers of the world including Australia, Brazil, United States, France, Costa Rica, South Africa, Tahiti, Peru and New Zealand, all of whom are coming to this country looking to earn the championship Gold Medal. Many morel countries are currently in the process of bringing their registrations up to date, thereby making their participation to the World Surfing Games official in the registry before the ISA.  In the entire world, there are 54 teams who have the option to participate in the Billabong ISA World Surfing Games Costa Rica 2009. Each nationally selected team has until July 30 to register in order to be included in this year’s spectacular contest.

The ISA World Surfing Games have taken place every year since 1964, and the record number of countries that participated at one time was in Huntington Beach, California in 2006. That year 33 countries arrived in “Surf City.”  With 35 national surf teams expected in Costa Rica, and the addition of Billabong as a title sponsor, , the 2009 Billabong ISAWorld Surfing Games could very well be the greatest edition of the championship yet.

The Federacion de Surf de Costa (FSC), which is organizing the event, anticipates that between the surf teams, their technical bodies, and the staff of the event itself, there will be more than 1,000 people with the contest in Jaco during the days of the Games.  Jose Ureña, President of the FSC, declared that the positive response from the national surf teams—which will break the participation record—indicates a great event. He also says having such a large turnout bodes well since the countries are meeting one of the great challenges of our time, the economic situation present at this time in the world.

“The teams that approach Costa Rica to a large extent are motivated by the warm water on our coast, the quality of our waves—which are the best ones in the world, very amiable people, their economic abilities to bring their full teams to the World Surfing Games, and the amount of different activities which they are complemented with in this country,” said Ureña. “With a month and a half to go, it is very probable that the number of countries will still increase. Once we initiate the Billabong ISA World Surfing Games, this will be a real celebration of cultures combining globally.”

This week, the South Africa team made the final team public of the eight athletes who will be surfing for their country in the Billabong ISA World Surfing Games, Costa Rica 2009. These surfers, who also participate on the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS), include Brandon Jackson, Rudy Palmboom, Damien Fahrentford and Ryan Payne in the Open category.

On the other hand, Latin American countries Venezuela, Peru and Puerto Rico have announced their teams. These include the best surfers of their countries including Francisco Bellorín, Gabriel Villarán and Brian Toth, respectively by nation.

In addition, it is no less important to stress the confirmed participation of unpublished countries for the World Surfing Games, as is the case of Vanuatu, an island in the continent of Australia, who will be sending a full contingent of surfers.

Playa Hermosa y Jacó izaron la Bandera Azul

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 19 June, 2009 : - - Por segundo año consecutivo Jacó recibió la Bandera Azul de Ciudad y la Bandera Azul de Playa para Playa Hermosa, lugar sede de los próximos Billabong ISA World Surfing Games Costa Rica 2009 que se celebrarán del 31 de julio al 8 de agosto próximo.

Para que se lograra la obtención de la Bandera en la Cuidad de Jacó, ejerció la unión entre la Municipalidad de Jacó, negocios locales y miembros de la comunidad donde aseguraron la lista de requisitos.

Por su parte, para lograr Bandera en Playa Hermosa, la acción fue de los miembros de los diferentes hoteles de la zona, así como el de la Presidenta de la Bandera Azul de Jacó, Sonia Alvarado, quien prometió la Bandera para antes de que se iniciara el Mundial de Surf en nuestro país.

Para recibir el premio Bandera Azul se evaluaron la calidad de las aguas, los sistemas de gestión de residuos sólidos, la señalización de carreteras, la educación ambiental y la seguridad pública, requisitos en los que viene trabajando intensamente la Municipalidad de Jacó con miras a que se realice los ISA World Surfing Games en una zona apta que albergará miles de personas durante la semana de competencia.

“Hemos recibido la noticia con gran satisfacción por la ardua labor que se ha venido haciendo en Jacó para la preparación del Mundial de Surf. La obtención de la Bandera Azul representa la calidad que hay en nuestra ciudad y en nuestras playas”, refirío el Alcalde de cantón, Marvin Elizondo.            

Según José Ureña, Presidente de la Federación de Surf de Costa Rica, el hecho que Playa Hermosa y la cuidad de Jacó hayan recibido la Bandera Azul ha sido uno de los principales logros de la comunidad previo al Mundial de Surf,  debido además que serán esos los lugares donde circularán miles de personas que se esperan para este gran evento.

“He sido testigo de la gran colaboración y buena voluntad de parte de la Municipalidad de Jacó, el Comité de la Bandera Azul, miembros de los hoteles, comerciantes locales y estudiantes de escuelas y colegios de la zona, porque se realice el los Billabong ISA World Surfing Games en las mejores condiciones”, acotó Ureña.

“Este es uno de los principales logros que junto con el Mundial de Surf la Federación ha logrado traer a Playa Hermosa ya que el mayor compromiso de ahora en adelante será mantener esta bandera para que futuras generaciones de surfos puedan disfrutar de una playa con una calidad de aguas optimas”, añadió.      

Lisbeth es ‘Símbolo de la Naturaleza’ El pasado mes de marzo en las instalaciones de Acueductos y Alcantarillados en Pavas, se hizo la entrega oficial de las Banderas de Jacó y Hermosa, donde la destaca surfista Lisbeth Vindas, recibió de manos del Ministro del Ministro de Turismos, Carlos Ricardo Benavidez, la Bandera de Jacó a la vez que fue nombrada durante los galardones ‘Símbolo de la Naturaleza’.

“Esto es lo más halagador que he recibido en mi carrera como surfista profesional. Estoy muy agradecida que me hayan nombrado Símbolo de la Naturaleza porque los surfistas nos conjuntamos con el medio ambiente todos los días”, expresó Vindas, preseleccionada nacional para el Mundial de Surf.

Además, la surfista se mostró motivada ante la noticia de que el Mundial de Surf se realizará en una ciudad limpia y segura, que además es la zona donde ha residido desde niña.
