Lendrum dazzles at the Red Bull Junior Surf Masters Newcastle

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 27 June, 2009 : - - Bar Beach, NSW – Sam Lendrum (Nord’s Wharf, NSW) capped off a perfect day today at Bar Beach with the perfect result, claiming the star-studded Newcastle qualifier for the Red Bull Junior Surf Masters Series. In a performance that only graces an athlete once in a while, Lendrum was dominant from the get go outpointing the region’s best pro junior surfers in excellent conditions.

Having finished third in the corresponding event last year, Lendrum was happy to have achieved the desired result this time around. “I’m really stoked,” he said with a grin. “I finished third here last year, so I wanted to win, but I knew with the calibre of guys competing it would be a tough ask.”

Defeating Dane Atcheson (Copacabana, NSW), Jake Sylvester (Bar Beach, NSW) and Duncan McNicol (Merewether, NSW), who finished second, third and fourth respectively, Lendrum finished with a combined heat total of 14.50 (out of a possible 20) in the final.

Beginning his strong march to the title in the quarter-final stages, where he was awarded a perfect 10 for his demolition of the Bar Beach left-handers, Lendrum went on to rack up the highest combined heat total for the event with an amazing 18.50 (out of a possible 20), then followed it up with a 15.50 in the semi-final.

“I’ve been surfing my backhand consistently over the past week so I felt really confident today on the left-handers,” he added. “The conditions were really fun and allowed all the guys to show what they can do – I was lucky to get the right waves at the right times.”

To be held across NSW and QLD this June, July and August, The Red Bull Junior Surf Masters, presented by Mick Fanning, allows tomorrows stars an opportunity to launch their surfing careers through expert tutelage and amazing prizes.

With a series of four more qualifying events to take place at Werri Beach, Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and Bondi, with the finals being held in Cronulla, Lendrum is looking forward to competing against the best. “I can’t wait to get down to Cronulla,” he said. “I’m off to Victoria, South Australia and Bali over the next few months, so hopefully I’ll be ready to go at Cronulla in August.”

With the top four surfers from each event (24 surfers in total) invited to battle it out at the Red Bull Junior Surf Masters Trials to be held in Cronulla on Friday, 28th August, the rest of the Series will be intense as the best juniors in the country battle it out for a place in the Final.

The next event on the Red Bull Junior Surf Masters Series will be held at Werri Beach on Saturday, 11 July 2009.
