Surfer Magazine names 50 greatest surfers of all time
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 30 June, 2009 : - - Dana Point -- On a newsstand near you is SURFER Magazine’s special 50 Greatest Surfers of All Time Big Issue. This 300-plus-page magazine comes in four unique collectible covers, each representing a different era of SURFER’s history.
Featuring a modern-day classic of Kelly Slater in Tahiti, Rabbit Bartholomew at Off the Wall, Tom Curren in his prime at the 1983 OP Pro, and Tom Blake surfing at Hermosa Beach in 1939; these covers are sure to be valuable collector’s items.
In homage of SURFER’s 50 year legacy, the issue also names the “50 Greatest Surfers of All Time,” as chosen by an elite list of voters made up of pro surfers, photographers, filmmakers, journalists, captains of the industry, and the living legends themselves.
The aim of such a list is to celebrate greatness and inspire debate. While list making is subjective in nature, expressing such appreciation and participating in the evaluation of the art of surfing is inherently a part of what makes these athletes great.
Some of the names that made the list include Tom Curren, Layne Beachley, Cheyne Horan, Greg Noll, Nat Young, Duke Kahanamoku, the Irons brothers, and even Dane Reynolds. To see where they rank, find out who else made the list, and identify panel members to debate their decisions, find your copy on newsstands now.
Unlike other list making endeavors, however, SURFER Magazine took it a step further by letting the legends speak about each other. As a result, the issue includes original pieces of writing from Kelly Slater, Shaun Tomson, Martin Potter, Rory Russell, Rabbit Bartholomew, Shane Dorian, Clyde Aikau, and many more.
Also, be sure to be a part of the collective voice and make yourself heard by voting for the 2009 Surfer Poll and Video Awards now at SurferPoll.com. For additional web features, photos, videos, community pages and more check out Surfermag.com.
