International Surfing Day

5th ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL SURFING DAY A SUCCESS

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 1 July, 2009 : - - San Clemente, Ca -- On June 20, surfers worldwide paddled out, and gave back in celebration of the fifth annual International Surfing Day, presented by Monster Energy. Founded by Surfing Magazine and the Surfrider Foundation, ISD celebrates the sport of surfing and raises awareness about issues affecting our oceans, waves and beaches.

This year, ISD events were held in over 105 locations worldwide, including the United States, Argentina, Australia, Canada, Costa Rica, Mauritius, Peru, Mexico, France, French Antilles, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, West Africa, Sweden, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

With swells coming from every direction, surfers were out in full force doing what they do best; catching waves.  In addition to surfing, many celebrated ISD by taking part in various environmental events hosted by the Surfrider Foundation.  From beach cleanups to movie screenings, surfers and other coastal enthusiasts spent the day giving back to our oceans, waves and beaches that they love and respect so much.

Highlights from the fifth annual International Surfing Day include:

    * Surfrider Foundation’s Oregon chapters joined forces to stoke out kids and families with the Otter Rock ‘N’ Roll Youth Surf Festival/Contest and beach cleanup.

    * Tamarindo, Costa Rica drew in over 300 people for an afternoon of live music on the beach courtesy of the Leatherbacks, surfboard demos, a “Junior Jam” expression session, volleyball, bocce ball, food and free giveaways.

    * In Huntington Beach, Surfrider’s Seal Beach, Huntington Beach and Newport Beach chapters partnered with Monster Energy and Surfing Magazine for a morning filled with food, a beach cleanup, live music, surfboard demos and a surf session.

    * The South Texas Chapter held an International Surfing Day Children’s Surf Clinic for over 90 kids.  In addition to the surf clinic, one of the Chapter’s most active members created a booklet for ISD showing that no matter what age (she is only 8), you can make a difference.

    * The Palm Beach County Chapter partnered with the Snook Foundation to host the Surfin’ Snook Summer Jam, at the Sunset Cove Amphitheater, which drew in over 600 people.  The evening featured acoustic performances by JJ Grey, Joey George, Will Connor and Peter Stein.

With tens of thousands of people celebrating International Surfing Day worldwide, the Surfrider Foundation estimates that over five thousand of bags of trash were collected at over 105 beach events.  In addition, more than 1,450 people joined or renewed their membership to the Surfrider Foundation on International Surfing Day.

International Surfing Day was made possible by SURFING Magazine, the Surfrider Foundation, Monster Energy Drink, Earthpack, EarthPositive Clothing, The Sign Shop, Electric, Ocean Minded, Matix, DVS, O’Neill, Reef, Sector Nine, Globe, Vans, Volcom, Body Glove, Patagonia, Billabong, Quiksilver, Rip Curl, Ecousable, Western Federal Credit Union and DaKine.
