ZigZag editor Will Bendix goes undercover for 4 months
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 2 July, 2009 : - - Will Bendix, editor of South Africa’s legendary Zigzag magazine, has been given a four month sabbatical to do what every surf mag editor dreams of: go surfing.
“I’m still not quite sure how I managed to sway the bosses so easily” laughed Will. “It’s going to be a good four months though...But in all seriousness, I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity, and it’s unreal to work for a company where people actually see the value in not only encouraging, but allowing their editors or staff to live the dream they work and breathe for.”
Will plans to spend at least six weeks of the time in South Africa, which he sees as cruising around one of the best places in the world, and spending quality time in the water with his readers before heading off to Indonesia for two months.
“In my mind, Indonesia has largely replaced Hawaii as the centre of the surfing world. Hawaii will always set the benchmark, but Indo is the place where pros, working class heroes and average Joes converge to realise their surfing dreams on some of the best waves in the world. It’s the best place to truly immerse yourself in the good, the bad, and the downright incredible in surfing.”
He will also be on location for the making of the second annual ‘Indo Issue’ of Zigzag, an issue entirely dedicated to surfing in this amazing archipelago.
“We themed an entire issue around surfing in Indonesia last year, and the response we had to it was so good, we decided to make it an annual instalment. We’ve got some great new adventures lined-up this year with internationally acclaimed Zigzag photographer Alan Van Gysen, so it’s definitely going to be a goodie.”
Bendix also plans to make a stopover in Australia for two weeks to visit Morrison Media, Australia’s largest media house of boardsports titles, where former Zigzag owner Craig Sims has been appointed as group publisher.
Barry Tuck will be taking over the reigns as managing editor during Will’s absence. “He’s got great experience as a former Zigzag assistant editor, prolific photographer, writer and previous editor of Blunt Magazine, and the team we’ve got in place right now is probably one of the best collective crews to have ever worked on the mag. So I’m leaving my baby in good hands!” said Will.
Bendix will be out the office (and slipping into his new one – see image attached) until 12 October.
