Sixteen Boys division score big on day three at the Billabong Occy Grom Comp
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 6 July, 2009 : - - Having waited through the opening two days of the Billabong Occy Grom Comp, the blue ribbon 16 Boys division enthusiastically charged the building clean 1m surf at Duranbah Beach today and high scores were posted throughout an explosive day of surfing action.
Each year this event exposes new talent and today 16 year old Balinese surfer Putra Hermanwan was the exciting revelation. The stylish surfer who grew up in Nusa Lembongan blitzed his quality opponents today easily defeating New Zealand’s Tom Doyle and eliminating highly rated Australian Harrison Mann.
With limited English Putra was able to explain his situation saying, “ I’m here with 5 other Balinese surfers to gain experience against Australia’s best young surfers, the waves are good fun but the water is cold!” Cold water for Putra but his surfing was hot as he reeled off excellent fast and smooth moves to notch up an 8.33 and 8.27 and the highest heat score of the day.
Number one seed Dylan Cummings (NSW/Central Coast/Norahville) set the standard early in the opening heat of the day posting an excellent 8.33 early in his heat and shortly after backing it up with a required second score of 7.67 to easily win his heat on an impressive tally of 16 out of a possible 20.
Dylan recently placed 12th in the International Surfing Association (ISA) 2009 World Junior Championships in Ecuador and he’s clearly keen to follow up on that result with a big performance here.
Local surfers were well represented today lead by Tweed Heads surfer Jake Cumberland who scored an outstanding 9.17 out of a possible 10 on his way to a powerful win over NSW surfer Beau Foster. Other locals to impressively win through were Noah Deane (Coolangatta) and Sol Pereria-Ryan (Coolangatta) who also scored two excellent 8 point plus scores.
Nick Edgerton (Noosa) and Thomas Cervi ( Sunrise Beach), ensured the Sunshine Coast will be well represented at this event as it now heads into the final two days both comfortably winning their 16 Boys heats today.
It’s Cervi’s final year at the Occy Grom Comp making him very keen to take a win here. “I made the semi’s at this event two years ago in the 14’s division and I’d love to make the final in my last year here.
“It’s a big event with great surfers from all over Australia and the world and you really need to be at your best in every heat here; I started slow in that heat and was in last place most of the heat but fortunately found some decent waves and rhythm late in the heat so I’m feeling good right now.”
Edgerton scored the morning’s highest scoring ride of a 9.4 on the way to his easy win and later in the day Josh Sherwell (Mooloolaba) joined them through to tomorrow’s round two.
Other Sunshine Coast surfers still in the event include Kia Hing (12 Boys),Eli Steele (Caloundra/14 Boys) , Quinn Bruce (Noosa/12 Boys), Charlie Roach (14 Girls/Maroochydore), Hayden Cervi (14 Boys/Sunrise Beach), Nick Callister (Noosa/14 Boys) and Kelly Norris (Codum Beach).
Today’s good waves are expected to maintain through the final two days at Duranbah and with all divisions into the serious stages the event is set for a fantastic finish. Tomorrows action is again most likely to be at Duranbah and the day will open with the highly anticipated 12 Boys quarter finals hitting the water around 7:30am.
Surfing Queensland event hotline, 07 3030 6388, will be updated each day by 6:30am with exact event location details.
