Finalists decided in 12 Boys and 16 Girls as Billabong Occy Grom Comp heads to finals day
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 7 July, 2009 : - - Australia’s top super young surfers stepped up today at the Billabong Occy Grom comp at Duranbah Beach setting the scene for a great final day tomorrow with a number of finalists already decided.
The much anticipated semi-finals of the 12 Boys division delivered some outstanding individual performances lead by Jeames Young (Yamba/Nth Coast NSW) and Kai Hing (Wurtulla/Sunshine Coast) who both convincingly won their respective semi-finals.
Young’s backhand smooth yet powerful style saw him take the win over the very highly rated Western Australian surfer Jack Robinson who also advanced through to the final in second place. The biggest surprise of the day was in semi two where Kai Hing confidently took on Californian wonder kid Kanoe Igarashi to take out a convincing win.
“I knew I’d have surf well” said Hing after his impressive win. “I just focused on getting the right waves and particularly tried to get a good score on the board early and build on that.
“The waves changed during the heat and the better waves seemed to break way further inside the original peak... I moved over and found my best waves there so it was a good heat.
“The finals going to be great, all the finalists have been scoring big throughout so whoever wins will need to surf really well...hopefully it’s me!” Today’s smaller clean waves saw a number of heats suffer with inconsistent waves while other heats enjoyed a flurry of good carvable waves.
The heat of the day was definitely the 16 Girls semi- final 1 which saw number one seed Tyler Wright (Lennox Head/Nth Coast NSW) pushed all the way in a high scoring see sawing three way duel. Wright was in third place at the half way stage of the semi-final but showed her experience and class finding two very good rides of a 7.83 and finally a 9.17 to take the heat.
Local Coolangatta surfer Brodie Doyle came from third place to steal 2nd and go into the final on her last ride when she scored the day’s top scoring ride with an outstanding 9.73 which saw Kingscliff/NSW surfer Cody Kline unluckily eliminated despite scoring an earlier excellent 8.1 ride.
Semi-final two saw Victorian standout Nikki Nan Dijk take the win but only just ahead of local girl Sarah Mason (Coolangatta) who has also qualified for tomorrow’s final. Boy’s 14 and under rounds three and quarter finals were also surfed through the afternoon with some high scoring performances from Soli Bailey (Byron Bay) and Chris Robinson (Cronulla).
Tomorrow’s final day will be a huge one beginning early with round two heats of 16 Boys before running into finals across all divisions during the afternoon and a slight swell increase is expected to deliver excellent surf at Duranbah.
