Excellent small waves at Keramas for round one of the Billabong Pro Junior Bali
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 21 July, 2009 : - - Keramas Beach, Bali -- Australasia’s top Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Pro Junior surfers were greeted with excellent 3 to 4 feet (1.25 metre) waves at the now famous Keramas surf break in Bali and organizers completed ten round one heats of the Billabong Pro Junior Bali before the day was called off as unfavourable winds moved in.
The perfectly shaped performance wave saw powerful moves combined with tube rides consistently registering high scores throughout the morning.
Australia’s Thomas “Tiger” Woods (Coolangatta/Qld/Australia) was the day’s standout surfer scoring both the highest scoring single ride of a 9.5 out of a possible 10 and the highest scoring combined two wave heat tally of 17.5 points out of a possible 20 in his impressive win.
“It’s such a performance wave here, even on the slightly smaller days like today and it’s very easy to chase the excellent scores as the sections just keep popping up” said 16 year old Woods.
Woods has free surfed this break on three previous trips to Bali and is excited about the building swells forecast for the coming days adding “ The wave stays the same as it gets bigger and it’s just a super performance wave from start to finish, you can start with barrel rides, move through floating sections and power through bottom and top turns then finish with aerials, it’s a great wave to compete in and I can’t wait for tomorrows heat in bigger swells!”
Organizers were briefly in two minds about beginning the event this morning given the pending arrival of larger swells. Contest Organizer Peter Thew assessed the conditions early consulting with competitors and contest director Wayan Kopling Wirtama who all agreed the excellent smaller waves were so good that round one should be surfed.
“The winds are ideal and the surfers are really keen to surf so I’m happy to see it off and running” said Thew. “I’m hoping for a great few days ahead, starting tomorrow and we’ll try and quality control this event all the way.”
Indonesian surfers were impressive today with winning performances from Putra Hermawan, Agua Sumeryatasa and Ketut Semadhi and clearly the local surfers are very capable of upsetting many of the internationals here as they compete in the only ASP event in Indonesia and the very first major ASP Pro Junior event ever run in Indonesia.
ASP regional director Dane Jordan commented on events beginning saying, “It’s an honour for ASP surfing to be here in such a quality location to compete; these are many of the world’s best 20 year and under surfers and the best of the Indonesian’s are showing that they are seriously up to this level and it’s great to see them winning heats”
“I think events like this will further push the local surfers to greater heights and for all surfers in the Australasian region surfing Keramas is a treat” added Jordan. Organizers will convene early tomorrow morning aiming for a 7:00am start with waves expected to be excellent.
