Cannelle Bulard and Charles Martin Shine in U.S. Open of Surfing Nike 6.0 Pro Junior

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 25 July, 2009 : - - Cannelle Bulard (REU), 15, and Charles Martin (GLP), 18, flew the European flag today at the U.S. Open of Surfing Nike 6.0 Pro Junior, respectively in the Women’s ASP Grade-2 and the Men’s ASP Grade-4 rated events. Escaping from one of the toughest fields of Under-21 surfers in the world to reach the final day of competition at Huntington, both French Islands representatives managed to show their potential against some of the world’s best competitors to end-up with a big result.

Cannelle Bulard, a Reunion Island born surfer who has been cutting her teeth on the ASP European Pro Junior Series for a couple of years now, was in superb form for her Californian run besting ASP Women’s World Junior No. 2 Bethany Hamilton (Maui, HAW), Hawaiian wunderkind Carissa Moore (Oahu, HAW) and current ASP Women’s World Tour rookie Alana Blanchard (Maui,HAW) en route to the final.

Placing 3rd in the last heat of the event, Bulard was not able to counter excellent performer and event champion Malia Manuel (HAW) and local favorite Sage Erickson (USA). Finishing ahead of other ASP Women’s World Tour rookie Coco Ho (Oahu, HAW), 17, Bulard leaves North America with a solid experience of high competitive surfing and will be a serious regional crown contender when she competes back in Europe.

Placing equal 7th in the Men’s division was Charles Martin (GLP), the 18-year-old and former ASP World Junior No. 3 using his growing experience and talent to find his way through to the Semifinals of the ASP Grade-4 rated event. Martin, who was not able to best favorites and promising rising talents Tonino Benson (Oahu, HAW) and Nat Young (California, USA) in the second Semifinal, still secured one of his career’s best results on the United States soil and signs a promising performance before flying back to Europe.

With the upcoming major Junior events in Europe, Martin and Bulard’s respective performances in the U.S. Open of Surfing Nike 6.0 Pro Junior might give them solid confidence to reach the finals and possibly grab a win on tour.
