Clint Dreyer Takes the 2009 Fox Surfer X Title
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 26 July, 2009 : - - Durban, South Africa -- Clint Dreyer of Richards Bay took the overall title and R10,000 first place prize after finishing second in the moto-X leg of the 2009 Fox Surfer X at the Fox Dirt Mania Track in Springfield today.
Dreyer's runner-up position in the moto-X today, combined with his ninth place finish in the surf leg at Dairy Beach yesterday, was enough to give him a mere one point win over runner-up Gavin Frost, while 2007 champion Darren Bunyan filled the third place slot.
"It feels great to have won the Fox Surfer X, and I am still in shock," said Dreyer after the prize-giving. "The surf contest was great yesterday, and the waves really fun so I enjoyed competing. But I knew I'd really have to step it up on the moto-X track to keep myself in contention for the title."
On a day punctuated by fierce racing action and several high speed crashes, Ricky Sneddon walked away with the honours on the racetrack and was awarded R1,000 for his effort. Unfortunately for Sneddon his placing in the surf leg of the Fox Surfer X didn't secure him enough points to put him in the overall top three of the Surfer X. Similarly yesterday's surf leg winner, Sean Payne, could not back up his result on the racetrack and he also missed an overall podium placing, settling for R1,000 for his victory at Dairy Beach yesterday.
Defending champion Wesley O'Driscoll placed fourth in the surf yesterday and went into the moto-X leg today a clear favourite, but once the dust had settled and the points tallied, O'Drisoll discovered he would have needed to place one position higher than his twelfth finish to secure the points he needed to take the overall title ahead of Dreyer. O'Driscoll placed tie fourth with fellow Durbanite Greg 'Rat' Mundy, a mere three points separating the pair from first placed Dreyer.
The Fox Surfer X is a unique specialty event that sees 32 invitees contest R20,000 in prize money as they compete in a surf competition and a moto-X race to decide on the ultimate cross-over athlete. Competitors in this year's event travelled form as far afield as Pretoria, Cape Town, Jeffreys Bay and Richards Bay to participate, highlighting the attraction of this unique contest. The 2009 edition of the Fox Surfer X is the third installment of this popular event, and attracted a host of spectators both to Dairy Beach on Saturday and the Fox Dirt Mania Track in Springfield today.
Another highlight of today's MX action was a demonstration by world class Freestyle Moto-X jumpers and Fox team riders Nick de Wit, Alastair Sayer and Brendon Potter. The trio wowed the crowds with their daring aerial antics that included several backflips across the 20 metre gap.
