Arnette NSW Junior Surfing Titles gets underway in style

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 29 July, 2009 : - - Boomerang Beach, NSW -- The first day of Arnette NSW Junior Surfing Titles went off in style today with the future of Australia’s surfing lighting up the mid-north coast. With the beautiful Boomerang Beach as their canvas the best 16 years and under competitors from the length of the NSW coast painted a picture of progressive, innovative and dynamic surfing in pristine one-metre conditions.

Littered with current and former World and Australian Junior Champions, as well as top-rated ASP Australasian Pro Juniors, the 16 years and under division, alone, illustrated the abundance of world-class talent on show. Led by another master class by Matt Banting (Port Macquarie, NSW), the action was of the highest order.

Surfing with precision and speed Banting amassed the highest total heat score of the day – with a blistering 16.50 (out of a possible 20). Attacking the shifting right hand peaks, Banting sent out a warning shot to his counterparts – heralding his intentions loud and clear on the first day of the event.

Current under 14 Arnette NSW Junior Surfing Titles champion Soli Bailey (Suffolk Park, NSW) was on Banting’s coat-tails for the top performer of the day. Taking to the air with a varied assault, Bailey was awesome accruing a total heat score of 15.50 (out of a possible 20).

“I felt really good this morning,” Bailey said after his opening heat of the event. It’s always good to start the campaign off with a confidence boosting heat,” he added. At still only 14 years of age Bailey is competing against rivals nearly two years his senior, something which he uses to his advantage.

“It can either work for you or against you,” he said wisely. “I just try and surf my own heat and not worry about who I have to compete against, but at  the same time being younger can definitely work in my favour.”

Running from Wednesday, 29 July to Sunday, 2 August 2009, the Arnette NSW Junior Surfing Titles day event will see 220 surfers battle it out across six divisions for prestigious State Titles and selection into the esteemed Arnette Australian Junior Surfing Titles.

Having been to the Arnette Australian Junior Surfing Titles last year, Bailey is eager to get back to the pinnacle of junior surfing within this country. “It’s definitely my goal this year,” he said. “To make the Aussies again would be amazing.”

Also impressing today was Jordan Lawler (North Narrabeen, NSW), Josh Hay (Copacabana, NSW) and Jake Scott (Malabar, NSW) who all impressed en-route to qualifying for the next round.

The Arnette NSW Junior Surfing Titles will be broadcast LIVE via live.coastalwatch.com/08_default.aspx?eid=15596&qryL=english with live scores, commentary, Results, news, photo and video galleries. For the confirmed daily contest location and running schedule, please call the Surfing NSW Event Hotline on 0458 247 212 after 6:45am each day of the event.

The Arnette NSW Junior Surfing Titles are proudly supported by Arnette, Country Energy, Great Lakes Council, Great Lakes Tourism, Australia's Surfing Life, Great Lakes Surf School and Surfing NSW.

About Arnette: In 1992, Californian surfer Greg Arnet designed the first 3 sunglass styles of the Arnette range out of his garage. Even back then, his project already encapsulated the sense of challenge, freedom and fierce individualism that have become distinguishing characteristics of Arnette.

Over the past seventeen years Arnette has firmly established itself as a respected leader in the global eyewear market. Driven by Surf/Skate/Snow lifestyle, Arnette is about Style over Tech, Raw over Polished, Attitude over Podium, and most importantly – having a good time.

Our team of athletes and influencers blaze their own trails and are dedicated to the purity of the lifestyle that they helped create – a lifestyle that speaks loud and clear to those that dare to take the world head-on and make it their own.

Arnette’s diverse collection is available at action sport and sunglass specialty retailers worldwide.
