Sea Amphibians win second leg of the 2009 Lizzard Tag Series in Port Elizabeth

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 30 July, 2009 : - - The second leg of the 2009 Lizzard Tag Series took place at Pollock Beach in Port Elizabeth, a surf spot that is 80km's north of Jeffrey’s Bay. Pollock produced some of its finest waves for all the under 16 surfers who competed in the Tag Series and gave the older surfers in the Expression Session something to work with as well.

Thanks to a recent  Jeffrey’s Bay swell which was moving up the coast competitors had their pick of perfect left and right beach break waves, conditions which lasted throughout the day.

With over 30 surfers competing in the tag event it was action from the outset but in the end Steven Sawyer (Jeffrey’s Bay) one of the country's top junior surfers, helped take his team, the Sea Amphibians, to victory in the 50 minute final. The Sea Amphibians shared R2000 in hard cash for their victory over The Rebels. The Rip Kids were third just a point behind the Rebels while the Wild Dogs secured fourth spot.

A new inclusion to all the 2009 Lizzard Tag Series legs is the Expression Session which caters for the older, more experienced surfers in the area. With R2000 up for grabs for the winner, the expression session added a lot of excitement at the end of the glorious sunny day at Pollock Beach.

Bertie Stuurman (Jeffrey's Bay) who returned just in time for his heat after flying back from a training session in Cape Town with the National Team, took the cash. Stuurman outscored PE local Donovan Zoetmulder in the final, landing a huge backhand off the lip to get the nod from the judges.

Eight year old Antonio da Costa (Jeffrey’s Bay), the youngest competitor in the event  was surfing in his first ever surfing competition and was stoked to be a member of the second placed Rebels team. His share of the winnings was R200.

“This is what the Lizzard Tag Series is all about. Introducing these young kids of all levels to competition surfing and hopefully inspiring them to take it further and becoming professionals one day” said Lizzard’s Gavin Roberts, who helped organize this weekend event together with the crew from the EP Surfing Council.

The Lizzard Tag Series and Expression Session is sanctioned by Surfing South Africa, the governing body for surfing in South Africa.
