Tow Surfing Champion Garrett McNamara to join legendary waterman Darrick Doerner
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 30 July, 2009 : - - New York, NY -- SEA Paddle NYC will kick off its third year of raising money to promote autism awareness and coastal preservation on Monday, August 24, 2009 at 9:00 am. The event is headquartered at Liberty Landing Marina in Jersey City but paddlers will launch at Pier 17 at South Street Seaport and then circumnavigate the island of Manhattan on the East River, Harlem River and Hudson River.
Due to the incredible success of previous year’s paddles, more than 100 participants have already registered for this challenging 28-mile journey, which will end some 6 hours later at Battery Park City’s North Cove Marina.
As in previous years, the event will showcase some of the world’s top paddlers as well as celebrity personalities who will also be paddling. Legendary big wave surfer Garrett McNamara, Baywatch actor David Chockachi, X-treme athlete Darian Boyle, and Surfer’s Healing Founder Izzy Paskowitz are just a few of the recent additions to the growing list of VIP celebrity paddlers joining forces for this epic journey. They will also be accompanied by some surprise paddlers and special guests.
Garrett McNamara, one of Hawaii’s elite big wave chargers, has paddled, towed into and stand-up paddled into some of the largest and deadliest waves on the planet. From the “Jaws” of Maui to the Tahitian beasts at Teahupo as well as into the tsunami-generated waves of Alaska, “Gmac” has ridden it all.
David Chokachi, best known for his role as Cody Madison on Baywatch, will be flying in from Hawaii to paddle. He is currently starring in “Beyond the Break” an MTV Networks series on the N. When not filming, David devotes much of his time to surfing and bringing awareness to important water-related issues.
Surfers’ Healing Founder and legendary waterman Israel “Izzy” Paskowitz will also be paddling in the event. Israel is the son of the famous Doc Paskowitz, a physician by training who gave up practicing medicine to become a professional surfer. The Paskowitz clan, often regarded as the “first family of surfing”, has given back tremendously to the surf community - first with their surf camps and now with Surfers’ Healing.
Jesse Itzler, a successful teenage rap artist in the 1980s who made it to Billboard’s Hot 100 list and MTV stardom and co-founded the record label Alphabet City, will also be paddling. Most known for his 1991 breakaway album," Thirty footer in your Face", Itzler is a Long Island boy who grew up in Roslyn, NY. Transforming from jingles to jets in 2001, Itzler co-founded Marquis Jets, a company which leases private jets on a per-day basis, and is now one of Crain’s Forty Under 40 list of rising business stars.
X-treme athlete and TV personality Darian Boyle will also be paddling. Ms. Boyle is a former World Champion in Skiercross, a Silver medalist at the X-games in 1999, and winner of the Best Female Freeskier award at the World Extreme Sports Awards in 2000. As one of a handful of women to participate in the paddle, Darian encourages more women to join in on the fun.
Black and White Events on Aug 20 and 22 Add Parties to the Paddle
Prior to the paddle, two parties will be held to raise money for the cause and set the mood for the most important and memorable days of summer for SEA. The “Black Party” will be held at Gallery Bar, located on Manhattan’s Lower East Side on Thursday, August 20. The “Black Party” has been added this year to compliment the “White Water Evening” held two days later, on August 22, at an oceanfront estate in Monmouth Beach, NJ. The public is welcome to attend, and will be joined by celebrity paddlers and other VIPs.
