Scores soar at Arnette NSW Junior Surfing Titles
Watson and Chapman crowned Arnette NSW Junior Surfing champions
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 1 August, 2009 : - - Boomerang Beach, NSW -- If there ever any question about the state of junior surfing within NSW, day four of the Arnette NSW Junior Surfing Titles appeased even the toughest of critics.
With two champions crowned and some blistering surfing action on show, Boomerang Beach proved to be the playground for some of the world’s best under 18 surfers with Jordi Watson (Currarong, NSW) and Cooper Chapman (North Narrabeen, NSW) reaping the highest rewards.
Beginning with the prestigious under 18 years division the future of Australian surfing went ballistic. Watson, who had been the form surfer throughout the week, was over the moon with his win, beaming with the biggest of smiles.
“I’m so stoked,” he said after defeating Jake Sylvester (Bar Beach, NSW), Wade Carmichael (Avoca Beach, NSW) and Oscar Scanes (Old Bar), who finished second, third and fourth respectively. “I’ve had so many decent results in the past year, but to finally win a prestigious event like this is amazing.”
Accruing a massive score of 14.75 (out of a possible 20) in the final, which included a near perfect 9.50 (out of a possible 10), Watson surfed with his renown precision and powerful demeanour. However, it did not go his way for the entire heat. Having watched Sylvester demolish a wave at the beginning of the final, Watson knew he had his work cut out fir him.
“I sat there and watched Jake go to town on his first wave,” Watson said. Nervously waiting for the siren to sound, and with Sylvester only needing a small score, Watson left it up to the gods. “I was just hoping he didn’t get a wave, I knew if he did it would be all over, but thankfully he wasn’t able to get anything,” he said after outpointing Sylvester by a mere 0.60.
With the top seven surfers of both divisions qualifying for the Arnette Australian Junior Surfing Titles there was plenty at stake on super Saturday; and Cooper Chapman led the way in the 16 years division. Having blown the minds of spectators, competitors and local community alike, Chapman was the rightful victor after an amazing week of surfing.
Defeating Joshua Hay (Copacabana, NSW), Jake Scott (Malabar, NSW) and Soli Bailey (Suffolk Park, NSW), who finished second, third and fourth respectively, Chapman soared to victory with a score of 14.50 (out of a possible 20).
“It was a great contest and I’m really stoked to have won,” Chapman said. “I want to dedicate this victory to my Pop who is at home in hospital,” he continued... This ones for him.”
